A fisherman and a fish
Long, long ago, there lived an old fisherman and his wife. They lived in a hut beside the sea. the fisherman used to catch fish with his net and his old wife used to make thread. Thus they were passing their life. One day, the fisherman went to the sea with his net. He threw the net and pulled it up. But there was some mud and nothing else in the net. The second time came up some grass. The third time, a fish was caught. It was a nice golden fish.
The fisherman was very glad to see the fish. But when he was about to touch it, it spoke out, “Oh good old man! Please, set me free and let me go. I promise, I’ll give you all that you may ask for. “The fisherman was astonished. He requested the fish to place him above want. After that he freed the fish and went home. When he reached home, he became wondered seeing a palatial building with all amenities with the things they got. She told her husband to demand more to the fish.
The old man went to sea-shore with trembling steps. With tears in his eyes, he called the fish again. The golden fish came to him and said. “Tell me, oh good old man,” the old man tried to utter the words of his wife many times but he failed. So, the fish said again. “oh good old man! Don’t hesitate. Tell me what you want.“ “I don’t want anything,” said he. My greedy wife has forced me to come to you once again. She wishes to be the empress of all a strong lash of her tail on the water; she went sown deep into the blue sea.
The old man got up from the sea-shore and went home with slow steps. When he reached home, he found to his surprise that his old wife was sitting in front of the hut with the broken wooden vessel beside her.
The Fisherman and the Golden Fish
A long time ago, an old fisherman and his wife lived in a small hut near the sea. They were very poor but managed to survive. Every day, the fisherman went to the sea to catch fish, while his wife stayed home and made thread. They did not have much, but they lived a peaceful life.
One morning, the fisherman went to the sea as usual. He threw his net into the water and pulled it up, but there was nothing but mud. He tried again, but this time he caught only grass and leaves. On his third attempt, he finally caught a fish. But it was no ordinary fish—it was a beautiful golden fish!
The fisherman was amazed. He had never seen such a fish before. But just as he was about to touch it, the fish suddenly spoke! "Oh, kind old man! Please set me free. If you let me go, I will give you anything you ask for."
The fisherman was shocked. He had never heard a fish talk before. At first, he did not know what to say. Then he thought for a moment and said, "I do not need anything. I am happy with what I have." But the golden fish insisted, "Please, ask for something. I want to thank you for your kindness."
The fisherman finally said, "If you wish to help, please make sure that my wife and I never go hungry again." The golden fish nodded and said, "Go home. You will find everything you need."
The fisherman released the fish and returned home. To his great surprise, his old hut had turned into a beautiful wooden house. Inside, there was plenty of food, warm clothes, and comfortable furniture. His wife was overjoyed when she saw the changes, but soon, greed entered her heart.
"This is nice," she said, "but it is not enough! Go back to the fish and ask for a grand palace."
The fisherman did not want to disturb the kind fish again, but his wife kept insisting. So, with a heavy heart, he went back to the sea and called the golden fish. The fish appeared and asked, "What do you want, kind old man?"
The fisherman hesitated but then said, "My wife is not happy. She wants a grand palace now."
The golden fish sighed but agreed. "Go home. Your wish is granted," it said before disappearing.
When the fisherman returned home, he saw that his wooden house had turned into a huge palace with golden walls and silver gates. His wife was dressed in rich clothes and had many servants. But even this did not satisfy her.
A few days later, she said, "This is still not enough! Go back to the fish and tell it that I want to be the Empress of the land!"
The fisherman was heartbroken. "Please, my dear wife, we have everything we need. Let us not be greedy," he pleaded. But she refused to listen and forced him to go again.
Slowly, the fisherman walked to the sea. The water had turned dark and stormy. He called the golden fish, and after a long time, it finally appeared. "What do you want now, old man?" it asked.
The fisherman, with tears in his eyes, said, "Forgive me, dear fish, but my wife now wants to be the Empress of the land."
The golden fish looked at him sadly and said nothing. With a strong flick of its tail, it disappeared into the deep sea.
The fisherman stood there for a while, feeling worried. He slowly made his way back home. But when he arrived, he was shocked. The grand palace was gone. His wife was sitting in front of their old hut, and their broken wooden vessel lay beside her.
The fisherman sighed deeply. His wife’s greed had taken everything away. From that day on, they lived as they did before—poor but wiser than before.
