Visiting a village fair has a great value and importance in our life. I am a student. I am very fond of visiting village fair. A village fair is one of the most enjoyable and Joyful places to the village people. A village fair is a fair where village products are displayed and sold at a cheap rate . It sits almost in every big village in Bangladesh. Every year a week-long village fair sits in our native village which stands on the river Meghna. This time too a week-long fair sat in the village on the occasion of the last Durga Puja. The fair was organized by the local shopkeepers. I went to the fair with my grandfather who is also fond of visiting fairs. We found hundreds of decorated shops. They sat in rows for displaying and selling their fancy and attractive articles. Many kinds of fancy and cheap articles like dolls, toys, kites, combs, bangles , ribbons cheap ornaments , bamboo and wooden articles , garments and many other things were sold there. Circus party, doll dance, magic show and cock-fight were the main attraction in the village fair. I enjoyed the cook-fight much. The fair was a large gathering of men, women and children of all classes. All were busy in buying and selling articles. I also bought some fancy things for my youngers. I met hundreds of children of my own age. The gambling party was also seen there. I returned home before sun-set with a happy and cheerful mind. The fair is a great source of amusement and joy for the rural people. It removes the monotony of the village routine works and widen the out look of the rural people .It also helps to develop village economy and life. So everybody should visit a village fair every year.

A village fair is a gathering of village people. It is usually he annually or periodically at a certain place on the occasion of Bengali new year day or a religious festival. It lasts for a day of two. It is generally held in an open space or the bank of the river of the river or near a banyan tree.

I had the experience of visiting a village fair held in our neighbor’s village last month. It was the 30th Poush. The fair took place around a lard banyan tree. it was observed on the occasion of the harvest-home.

On the fixed day, I along with two of my cousins started for the fail 10.a.m. Entering into the fair, we found hundreds of booths, stalls and tents in the field around the big banyan tree. I came to know that the traders, craftsmen and other interred people came to the place the previous day. Various kinds of goods such as dolls, ear wares, toys, fluted, balloons, baskets, imitation ornaments etc. were dispel there in an attractive manner to draw the attention of the customers. Food of all kinds also available in the fair.

We began to walk along the lanes between rows of chores. We atched that men, women and children gathered in the fair in a large number. They were busy in buying for themselves and for their dear and near ones. We came to a place where there was merry-go-round and looked at it for sometimes. Then we enjoyed a circus now. Coming out of the circus, I drank the water of a green coconut. Next I proceeded to the front of a booth and bought some fancy things for my younger sister. For myself, I bought a mouth-organ and some sweetmeats.

I had been sweating profusely since I got into the crowd. To, we came out of the crowd and started for home in the afternoon. From my visit to the fair, I have learnt many things about rural life and culture. Really, the memory of this air will remain ever fresh in my mind.

This year I had the opportunity to visit a village fair in my native village. It was the 12th of ‘Chaitra’, the last month of the Bengali year. I went to pass some days in my village home. There I came to know that the annual village fair was being held. So, I along with one of my cousins went to visit the fair. Immense crowds were making their way towards the fair. The fair was held over the open space around the shrine of a Muslim saint.

We got into one of the moving crowds and made our way with it to the field where the fair was being held. When we reached there, we were rewarded with the sight of a spectacle which I think I shall never forget. What caught my sight first was a vast assemblage of men, youths and children in fine dress over an extensive field.

There were long rows of booths with broad passages between. In these booths were displayed almost all sorts of things ---- toys, cosmetics, knives, whistles, earthen wares, brass wares, fruits and sweets. It seemed to be a kind of exhibition in miniature of cottage industries. The rural artisans and craftsmen brought their handmade articles to the fair.

Wherever we rent, our sense of hearing was greeted with the shrill music of flutes and the harmonious and discordant sound of mouth-organs. To all this were added the loud trade-cries of hawkers and the haggling of customers. The noise that all these combined to make was, in short, deafening. As we neared the shrine, a sweet music was greeted our ears. We advanced and saw a group of people sitting in the veranda of the shrine. They were singing ‘Kawali’ to the accompaniment of a number of musical instruments. We stood still for sometime and listened to it with rapt attention.

Different forms of amusements were also accommodated to provide a happy diversion to the rural people. ‘Travelling jatra parties’, ‘Nagar- dolas’ ‘Circus parties’ etc were showing their feats and performances. A magician too was found under a small tent ready to show his tricks to the people against small sum. But the largest crowd gathered around the place where jugglers exhibited their feats. My cousin insisted me to get into the circus tent for enjoying the circus show. As we approached, we heard rapping on a drum accompanied by the sound of some wind-instrument. So we purchased two tickets and entered in. We understood that they were meant to attract attention. We then went in and witnessed some very thrilling performances. We had our money’s worth.

It was a means of recreation, change and social get-together of the village people. But one thing I noticed that the fair had lacking in arrangement for proper sanitation. The experience of visiting the fair is really engraved in my heart for long.

MY VIST TO A VILLAGE FAIR

Moreover it is a great source of recreation to them. A fair is usually held in an open space to which communication is easy. People from many places come to a fair to buy as well as to sell. Usually it is held on occasions like the Bengali New Year's Day, the 21st February, and the Eid Day. A village fair is a gay affair. I have been to such a fair several times in my life. The fair I visited last was held in the Public Library premises in Rangpur town. On the occasion of 1st Baishakh I visited the fair. I was accompanied by two of my bosom friends. There were different types of stalls in different rows, such as: book stalls, stalls for dolls and toys, electronic goods, handmade goods, etc. All stalls were almost crowded. We moved round the fair and enjoyed it very much. My friends and I rode on merry-go-rounds. I bought some toys for my younger sister.

A village fair is a place of fun and enjoyment for the people living around. It dispels the monotony of the village people. All categories of people- poor and rich, children and adults, men and women, illiterate and educated come crowding in the fair and enjoy the best of it according to their area of interest. The most delighted are the children. They buy cheap flutes, toys, sweets and fancy goods, ride the merry-go-round and feel terribly happy and excited.

It is, thus, crystal clear that a village fair bears a great significance to the people. Villagers take it as a soruce of their recreation. It helps them to remove dullness from their mind. Moreover it plays a vital role to the rural economy also.
