Urmila the Accomplished Swimmer

Urmila was a little girl who grew up in a village named Patuair in Kishoreganj district. A small river called Phuleswari flowed through her village. At the age of five, Urmila used to go to the river with her father. Her father, a hardworking man who lived a simple life, was an excellent swimmer himself. He believed that every child living near a river should know how to navigate the water for their own safety. He started by letting Urmila splash around the shallow edges, but he soon noticed something extraordinary. Urmila didn't just play in the water; she moved through it with a natural grace and speed that was rare for a child of her age.

Every morning, before the village fully woke up, Urmila and her father would head to the bank of the Phuleswari. He taught her various strokes and how to hold her breath underwater for long periods. Urmila loved the feeling of the cool water against her skin. To her, the river was not just a body of water, but a vast and beautiful playground. While other girls her age were busy playing with dolls or helping with light household chores, Urmila was busy challenging the currents of the river. Her father became her first coach, and the Phuleswari became her training ground.

As she grew older, her reputation as a "water girl" spread throughout the district. However, life in a rural village often comes with social challenges. Some conservative neighbors started whispering that it was not "decent" for a growing girl to swim in the open river every day. They suggested she should stay at home and focus on more traditional activities. But Urmila's father ignored the gossip. He saw the passion and the fire in his daughter's eyes and knew she was destined for something much bigger than a quiet village life. He often told her, "The water of Phuleswari does not distinguish between a son and a daughter, so why should we?"

When she reached the age of fifteen, a talent scout from the national sports academy visited Kishoreganj. He happened to see Urmila swimming across the river during a local festival and was stunned by her raw power and stamina. He invited her to participate in the National Swimming Competition held in Dhaka. It was the first time Urmila had ever left her village or even her district. The sight of the bustling city and the modern, blue-tiled swimming complex was overwhelming for her, but she remembered her father’s words: "The water is the same everywhere; just trust your strength."

In the final race, Urmila was up against professional swimmers who had trained in world-class pools with expensive gear. But none of them had the raw, natural strength that Urmila had developed by fighting the heavy river currents every monsoon. When the whistle blew, she dived in and became like a streak of lightning in the water. To everyone's shock, she won the gold medal, shattering the previous national record. Her success brought immense pride to Patuair. She proved that talent isn't restricted to big cities or wealthy families; it can bloom anywhere there is passion, hard work, and the support of a loving parent.

Moral: Persistence and parental support can turn a simple hobby into a great achievement.

An Intelligent Tortoise

One day, a thirsty tiger was drinking water from a river when he noticed a slow-moving tortoise nearby. The tiger was feeling hungry, so with a quick jump, he caught the tortoise in his strong paws.

The tiger tried to crush the tortoise’s hard shell with his sharp teeth, but no matter how hard he bit, the shell did not break. He tried again and again, but the result was the same—the shell remained unbreakable. Frustrated, the tiger growled, "Your shell is too strong! But I know how to get rid of you! I will throw you into the fire!" The tortoise felt afraid, but he was also clever. Without showing his fear, he calmly said, "Oh, that's no problem, Sir! Fire is my friend. It keeps me warm and safe."

The foolish tiger did not realize that the tortoise was tricking him. He asked again, "So, you are not afraid of fire?" The tortoise replied, "Not at all! Fire loves me, and I love fire." Hearing this, the tiger became angry. He wanted to punish the tortoise in a way that would make him suffer. He thought for a moment and then said, "Then I will throw you into the river instead!"

Hearing this, the tortoise felt very happy, but he did not show it. Instead, he pretended to be terrified and cried out, "Oh no! Please don’t throw me into the water! I will surely drown and die!" The foolish tiger laughed loudly, thinking he had finally found a way to get rid of the tortoise. Without another thought, he threw the tortoise into the river.

As soon as the tortoise hit the water, he happily swam away. The tiger watched in shock, realizing too late that he had been tricked. This story teaches us that intelligence is more powerful than strength. A clever mind can overcome any danger, no matter how powerful the enemy is.
