DU A-UNIT ENGLISH QUESTION SOLUTION 2010-2011
Read the following text and answer questions (1-5).
It is not only diet and lifestyle that make you obese. There is another factor that lies in your part of DNA called the gene that may influence the shape of your body. A study has recently revealed that genes may play a role in regulating body shape. The effect of genes may be stronger for women than for men. Scientists have found gene variations linked to obesity and fat, which explain why some people are apple-shaped and some are pear-shaped. Previous studies found that when we store fat in our bodies it can affect our health.
More fat around the waist is linked with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease while having a fat posterior and thighs may offer some protection against diabetes and heart disease. Experts have opined that in most cases obesity, is caused by “unhealthy diet and lifestyle and that tackling obesity is challenging. However, recent developments in genetics will enable more targeted approaches to obesity prevention and to the invention of new drugs.

Answer-Key with Brief Explanations
# | সঠিক উত্তর | বিশদ ব্যাখ্যা (বাংলায়) |
| D – The role of genes in maintaining our figure | মূল অনুচ্ছেদে জিন কীভাবে শরীরের গঠন/ফ্যাট বণ্টন নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে— সেটিই আলোচনার কেন্দ্র।
| C – according to the views of experts | “have opined” = মতামত দিয়েছেন। work (A)-এ ‘discovery’ ও (D)-তে ‘study’ শব্দ থাকায় ভুল; views-ই ঠিক। |
| D – a research | একাডেমিক ভাষায় a study মানে ‘একটি গবেষণা’। তাই ‘research’–ই সঠিক। |
| C turn | in turn = একে-একটি করে/ধাপে-ধাপে। পুলিশ প্রত্যেক সাক্ষীকে পালা-ক্রমে জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করেছে। |
| B centred | ভাবনা-চিন্তা কোনো কিছুর উপর centre on হয়। centred on = “কেন্দ্রিত ছিল”। |
| C by | কাজ সম্পন্নের ডেডলাইন বোঝাতে by the end of… ব্যবহার হয় (‘শেষ হওয়ার পূর্বেই’ অর্থে)। |
| C am | Neither…nor গঠনে ক্রিয়া নিকটস্থ subject-এর সাথে মিলবে; এখানে নিকটতম ‘I’, তাই am। |
| D on the contrary | আগের বক্তব্যের ঠিক উল্টো জোর দিতে এই linking phrase-টি ব্যবহৃত হয়: “মোটা না, বরং একেবারে চিকন।” |
| D fell asleep during the ceremony | বিয়ের কনের ঘুমিয়ে পড়া বাগদারক পরিস্থিতি, বাকিরা লজিক্যাল-নয়/খবরের “embarrassing” দিক বুঝায় না। |
| A corpse | প্রাণীর মৃতদেহ = corpse (carcass-ও হতো)। Corset = পেট মোটা চেপে ধরা পোশাক; corps = দল; casket = কফিন। |
| D Only with hard work | ‘শুধু কঠোর পরিশ্রমের মাধ্যমেই’ → প্রয়োজনীয় শর্ত বোঝাতে Only with + noun রূপ। |
| C sensational | Penicillin-এর আবিষ্কার ছিল “হইচই-তোলা/সমসাময়িক যুগান্তকারী” → sensational discovery। |
| B from, in | suffer from (কোনো কিছুর দ্বারা ভোগা) + remedy lies in (সমাধান নিহিত)। |
| B – to do some ugly work in public | Idiom-টি মানে ব্যক্তিগত/লজ্জাজনক ব্যাপার জনসমক্ষে প্রকাশ করা— “ঘরের অগোছালো কাপড় বাইরে ধোয়া।” |
| B – to suspect a trick or deceit | ‘ইঁদুরের গন্ধ পাওয়া’ = কোনো ষড়যন্ত্র, গোলমাল বা ছলনা আঁচ করা। |
| D (too) | সমন্বয় বোঝাতে গঠন: not only A but also B. এখানে too বসানো অগ্রহণযোগ্য। |
| C despite of | Despite-এর পরে কখনো of বসে না; তাই ভুল অংশ C. |
| B will | অতীত দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে ভবিষ্যৎ বোঝাতে would দরকার; “figured that it would take…”. |
| C – One of the problems is… | “One of + plural noun + singular verb”. ‘problem’s’ যুক্ত ব ভুল punctuation, অন্যগুলো subject-verb বিভ্রান্তি। |
| B – born on 13 April in 1992 | তারিখের আগে on, সালের আগে in. |
| B thoughtful | Pensive = ভাবলেশহীন/মনোযোগী চিন্তায় নিমগ্ন। |
| B anger | Indignation = ন্যায়সঙ্গত রাগ/ক্ষোভ। |
| D trickery | Subterfuge = ধোকা/চাতুরী দিয়ে লক্ষ্য অর্জন। |
| A – has not yet borne fruit | Present perfect, verb 3 of bear = borne; ‘fruit ধরে নাই’ বোঝায় passive ‘borne’. |
| A – genetic mutation |
