The Happy Man Had No Shirt

The joy and simplicity I observed in these Peruvian children, despite their poverty, reminded me of a story I read long ago during my middle school years. It left a profound impression on me.

Once upon a time, a powerful king became obsessed with finding the secret to true happiness. He believed that possessing the shirt of a genuinely happy man would grant him unending joy. Thus, he commanded his servants to search the entire kingdom for such a man and bring back his shirt.

The servants began their journey, traveling far and wide, but to their dismay, they couldn’t find anyone who was completely happy. Every person they met had some kind of hardship or sadness overshadowing their life. Just as they were about to give up, they came across a man in a remote village singing joyfully under the open sky.

“This man must be truly happy,” they thought. Eagerly, they approached him and engaged in conversation. After some time, they concluded that this man was indeed genuinely happy—content with life and free of worries.

“Give us your shirt,” they said excitedly. “We’ll present it to the king, and you will be richly rewarded for it!”

The man smiled and replied, “I’m sorry, but I don’t have a shirt. I am so poor that I own nothing.”

The servants were stunned. They returned to the king and told him, “We did find a happy man, Your Majesty, but he didn’t even own a shirt.”

This story teaches us a profound lesson: happiness doesn’t come from wealth or possessions. It is often found in the simplest and most unmaterialistic lives, in the ability to find contentment with what little we have.

The Dress of a Happy Man

               Once upon a time, there lived a king in an ancient land. The king had great wealth and power. Still he was not happy. He was also not in sound health. He was suffering from a strange illness. Some sad and gloomy thoughts filled his mind.

 

              One day a physician was called in. After much study, the physician told that he had learnt the secret of his illness. The only way out was to wear the shirt of a happy man. Thus the king’s chamberlain began to search the kingdom for a happy man.

 

             First, he went to each rich and powerful person. Everyone answered that he did not know what happiness really meant. The chamberlain became very frustrated. He became tried of searching out a happy man.

 

            One day while he was getting back, he met a wood-cutter. “Are you happy?” asked the chamberlain. “As happy as the day is long.” Answered the wood-cutter.

 

          “Quick!” said the chamberlain. “Give me your shirt.” But to chamberlain’s surprise, the wood-cutter had no good shirt at all. He had a torn shirt which he offered. Wearing the shirt, the gloomy king began to come round.

দাসরা তাদের যাত্রা শুরু করে, দূর-দূরান্তে ভ্রমণ করে, কিন্তু তাদের হতাশার জন্য, তারা এমন কাউকে খুঁজে পেল না যে সম্পূর্ণ সুখী। তাদের দেখা প্রতিটি ব্যক্তির জীবনেই এক ধরণের কষ্ট বা দুঃখ ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল। তারা যখন হাল ছেড়ে দিতে যাচ্ছিল, তখন তারা একটি প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামে খোলা আকাশের নীচে আনন্দে গান গাইতে থাকা একজন ব্যক্তির সাথে দেখা করে।

"এই লোকটি অবশ্যই সত্যিই সুখী," তারা ভাবল। আগ্রহের সাথে, তারা তার কাছে গেল এবং কথোপকথনে মগ্ন হল। কিছুক্ষণ পর, তারা সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হল যে এই লোকটি সত্যিই সত্যিকার অর্থেই খুশি - জীবনে সন্তুষ্ট এবং উদ্বেগমুক্ত।
