Abdur Rahim, a day labourer, lived in a remote village under Nurpur Upazila. Despite his hard work, he struggled with extreme poverty, which made it nearly impossible to provide even the basic necessities for his family. He had four daughters, but due to his financial hardship, he could not afford to educate them. His family often endured days of starvation. Rahima, his eldest daughter, had a deep desire to receive an education, but her dreams were crushed by the harsh reality of their poverty.

When Rahima turned 14, Abdur Rahim became anxious about arranging her marriage, as society's expectations weighed heavily on him. Eventually, he married her off to an unemployed young man with the help of some villagers. However, shortly after the marriage, Rahima’s husband, driven by greed, began to torture her, demanding a dowry from her father. The innocent girl was sent back to her father’s house with the demand for 20,000 taka. But Abdur Rahim, already struggling to feed his family, was utterly unable to fulfill this illegal demand.

After three days, Rahima returned to her husband’s house and explained the miserable condition of her father. Her words, instead of evoking sympathy, fueled her husband’s anger, and he began to beat her mercilessly. Unable to endure the torture and finding no other way out, Rahima left her husband’s house and tragically took her own life.

This heartbreaking story is not uncommon in rural areas. Early marriage, dowry practices, and unemployment are deeply rooted issues that continue to destroy lives. It is crucial to enforce a complete ban on early marriage and eradicate the dowry system. Alongside, the government must work to address the unemployment crisis. Social awareness campaigns are essential to educate people about the harmful effects of early marriage, illiteracy, and the dowry system, paving the way for a more just and equitable society.

A day labourer Abdur Rahim lived in a rural area under Nurpur Upazila. But he had four daughters. Owing to extreme poverty he could not educate them. He hardly maintained his family. He used to pass his days with starvation. His elder daughter's name was Rahima. She wished to receive education but poverty didn't allow her to become educated. Abdur Rahim became worried about he- marriage when she was only 14 years old. At last he married her daughter to an unemployed young man. The villagers helped him. But it is a great pity that after a few week of her marriage the greedy and unemployed husband began to torture the innocent girl demanding dowry from her father. One day she was sent to her father's house for taking taka 20.000. But Abdur Rahim was extremely unable to meet the illegal demand of Rahima's husband. Being disappointed, Rahima came back to her husband's house after three- days. She told him about the miserable condition of his father. At this, the brute husband grew more angry and again began to beat her black and blue. Finding no other way, Rahima left her husband's house and died by suicide. This is a common grim picture in our rural areas. Early marriage must be banned and dowry system must be rooted out from the society. Unemployment problem also should be removed from the country. Social awareness should be created about the curse of early marriage, illiteracy, unemployment and dowry system.
