Poor Security and Harassment: Tourists Suffer in Jaflong

Jaflong is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Bangladesh. During the winter and Eid holidays, thousands of people visit this place to enjoy the beauty of the hills and the Piyain River. However, the lack of proper security and maintenance is ruining the joy of the tourists.

The main problem is the constant harassment by local brokers, dishonest boatmen, and illegal hawkers. As soon as tourists arrive, these people surround them and demand high prices for boat rides and local products. If anyone argues, they behave very rudely. Furthermore, there are frequent reports of mugging and theft in the crowded areas. Because of this chaotic situation, women, children, and families often feel very unsafe.

Although there is a Tourist Police unit, their number is very low compared to the huge crowd. There are no CCTV cameras or proper watchtowers to monitor the whole area.

To make Jaflong a safe and world-class tourist spot, the government must improve the security system immediately. The number of Tourist Police must be increased, and strict actions must be taken against the dishonest brokers. A safe and peaceful environment is the most important condition for tourism.

Terrible Road Conditions Decrease Tourist Flow to Jaflong

The natural beauty of Jaflong easily attracts the minds of nature lovers. But reaching this beautiful place has become a terrible nightmare for tourists because of the extremely bad condition of the connecting roads.

The main Sylhet-Jaflong highway is currently in a very dangerous and broken state. There are big holes and deep cracks everywhere on the road. During the dry season, the road is full of thick dust, and during the rainy season, it becomes full of dangerous mud. Moreover, hundreds of heavy stone-carrying trucks use this single road every day. As a result, massive traffic jams occur continuously.

A journey that should take only one hour often takes three to four hours. Because of the heavy shaking of the vehicles on the bumpy road, tourists become extremely tired and sick before they even reach the spot. Children and elderly people suffer the most. Hearing about this painful journey, many tourists are losing interest in visiting Jaflong.

A good communication system is the first step to developing tourism. The Roads and Highways Department must take immediate steps to repair and widen the Sylhet-Jaflong road. Without a smooth and safe journey, the tourism industry in this area will be completely destroyed.

Unplanned Shops Hiding the Natural Beauty of Jaflong

Tourists visit Jaflong to escape the noisy city life and enjoy the fresh, open beauty of nature. However, the exact opposite is happening now. The scenic beauty of Jaflong is being swallowed by hundreds of unplanned and illegal shops.

Wherever you look along the banks of the Piyain River, you will only see ugly tin-shed restaurants, souvenir shops, and floating markets. These illegal structures have completely blocked the open view of the beautiful Meghalaya hills and the clear river. Tourists do not find any quiet place to sit and enjoy nature peacefully.

Furthermore, these unplanned shops have no proper waste management system. The shopkeepers continuously throw their dirty water, leftover food, and plastic packets directly into the river. This is severely polluting the clean water and creating a bad smell in the area. The entire zero-point area now looks more like a dirty local market than a national tourist spot.

To save the real beauty of Jaflong, proper zoning and maintenance are strictly needed. The local administration must quickly remove all illegal structures from the riverbank. They should build a specific, well-planned market zone slightly away from the main natural spot so that the environment remains clean and open.
