Reckless Driving in Bangladesh: A Daily Danger

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, June 20

Reckless driving has become a very common and serious problem on the roads of Bangladesh. Every day, we see news about terrible road accidents in newspapers and on television. Most of these accidents happen only because of reckless driving. It has made our streets very unsafe for everyone.

There are several reasons behind this problem. First, bus and truck drivers often drive at very high speeds. They dangerously race with each other on the streets to get more passengers. Many of these drivers do not have real driving licenses or proper training. They do not care about traffic signals or the safety of the people walking on the road.

Second, the number of motorcycle accidents is increasing very fast. Many young boys ride motorcycles very dangerously on busy streets. They like to drive at high speeds to show off to their friends. Sadly, they often do not wear safety helmets. As a result, when an accident happens, they suffer severe head injuries.

The results of reckless driving are very tragic. Hundreds of innocent people lose their lives every year. Many people lose their hands or legs and become disabled for their whole life. This brings great sorrow and financial problems to their families.

We must stop this problem immediately. The traffic police must be very strict and punish the drivers who break the rules. Drivers must be properly trained before getting a license. Also, parents should not buy fast motorcycles for young, untrained boys. Everyone must be careful and follow the traffic rules to save lives.

The Perils of Reckless Driving: City Streets Turn into Death Traps

Staff Reporter, The Daily Star, Dhaka, June 10

Reckless driving has become an alarming everyday reality on the streets of Bangladesh, turning roads into veritable death traps for common citizens. Despite various campaigns and the introduction of the Road Transport Act, the frequency of fatal accidents caused by unruly driving continues to rise at an unprecedented rate.

The primary culprits are often commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. In a frantic race to pick up more passengers and maximize daily profits, bus drivers frequently engage in aggressive overtaking and completely ignore traffic signals. Furthermore, a significant number of these vehicles are unfit for the roads, and their drivers often possess fake licenses. This chaotic situation is exacerbated by the lack of strict enforcement of traffic laws and the tendency of offenders to evade punishment through loopholes.

The consequences of this menace are devastating. Hundreds of innocent pedestrians and passengers lose their lives every year, leaving countless families emotionally and financially shattered. To curb this ongoing tragedy, the authorities must ensure the rigorous enforcement of traffic laws. Establishing an automated digital tracking system for speed limits and strictly verifying drivers' credentials are the need of the hour. Without bringing discipline to the transport sector, our streets will never be safe.

Two-Wheeled Terrors: The Alarming Rise in Motorcycle Accidents

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka Tribune, Dhaka, June 12

In recent years, the exponential rise of motorcycle usage in Bangladesh has brought forward a deadly trend: reckless riding by teenagers and young adults. Motorbikes, once seen merely as a convenient mode of transport, have increasingly become tools for dangerous street racing and showing off, leading to a catastrophic rise in road fatalities.

Young riders, often fueled by peer pressure and a false sense of heroism, frequently drive at breakneck speeds on busy city streets and highways. They recklessly weave through heavy traffic, ignoring lanes and traffic lights. Alarmingly, many of these young riders refuse to wear standard safety helmets, making even minor collisions highly fatal. Another contributing factor is that many affluent parents buy high-powered motorcycles for their underage children without ensuring they have proper training or valid driving licenses.

The impact of this reckless behavior is deeply tragic, with hospital emergency wards regularly receiving young victims with severe head injuries or paralyzed limbs. To tackle this growing epidemic, the traffic police must enforce a zero-tolerance policy against underage driving and helmet-less riding. Moreover, parents must act responsibly and refrain from handing over the keys to fast vehicles to their immature children.

Blood on the Asphalt: Reckless Driving Claims More Lives on Highways

Special Reporter, The Daily Sun, Dhaka, June 15

The national highways of Bangladesh are increasingly becoming synonymous with tragic bloodshed, predominantly due to the reckless driving of heavy vehicles. Every day, newspapers are filled with horrific images of mangled buses and trucks, reflecting a systemic failure in highway safety management.

Most highway accidents occur due to desperate overtaking attempts on narrow two-lane roads. Bus and truck drivers often drive continuously for hours without adequate rest, leading to severe physical fatigue and sleep deprivation. Consequently, they lose concentration and control over the steering wheel, resulting in deadly head-on collisions. Additionally, driving under the influence of drugs, driving at night with blinding high-beam headlights, and operating vehicles with faulty brakes are major contributing factors to these highway massacres.

When a highway accident occurs, the death toll is usually massive, wiping out entire families in a matter of seconds. To make our highways safer, the government must divide national highways into strictly separated four lanes. Furthermore, highway patrol police must actively monitor speed limits using radar guns, and transport owners must ensure mandatory rest periods for their drivers to prevent fatigue-related crashes.

Selected Vocabulary (নির্বাচিত শব্দার্থ):

  • Asphalt (n.) – পিচঢালা পথ

Tragic Collision Leaves Three Dead on Airport Road

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, June 18

A horrific road accident caused by reckless driving claimed the lives of three innocent people, including a college student, on the capital’s busy Airport Road yesterday morning. The tragic incident occurred at around 10:30 AM and left at least ten others critically injured, sparking massive outrage among the locals.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident took place when two passenger buses of the same transport company were recklessly racing against each other to pick up passengers from the upcoming stoppage. In a desperate attempt to overtake, one of the buses lost control, mounted the pavement, and ploughed through a group of people waiting for transport. Three people died on the spot.

Following the tragic incident, agitated locals and students blocked the busy road for three hours, demanding immediate justice and safer roads. They vandalized the killer bus, though the driver and the helper managed to flee the scene instantly. Later, a heavy police force arrived, pacified the angry mob with the assurance of arresting the culprits, and brought the traffic situation back to normal. Recent Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh: A Call for Preparedness

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, June 9

A moderate earthquake jolted Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh recently, creating severe panic among the citizens. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. It struck late at night on June 7, shaking buildings and waking people up from their sleep.

The epicenter of this earthquake was located in neighboring Bhutan, about 432 kilometers north of Dhaka. Though the shake was felt very strongly, thankfully, there were no immediate reports of any major damage to buildings or loss of life. However, the sudden tremor terrified the common people. Fearing for their lives, many people rushed out of their houses and high-rise apartments, taking shelter in the open streets.

Experts have repeatedly warned that Bangladesh is situated in an active earthquake zone. The frequent occurrence of such mild and moderate tremors is a serious warning sign. If a massive earthquake hits the country, highly populated cities like Dhaka will face unimaginable destruction. This is mainly because thousands of buildings have been constructed without following proper earthquake-resistant designs.

To prevent a future disaster, the government must take strict actions immediately. Construction of risky and unplanned buildings must be stopped. At the same time, massive public awareness campaigns should be launched. Everyone must learn basic safety rules, such as hiding under a strong table during a tremor. Though we cannot stop an earthquake, taking the right preparation can surely save thousands of lives.

Struggles of the Rohingya: A Crisis in Cox’s Bazar

Amin, Cox’s Bazar, February 1, 2025

The Rohingya crisis remains one of the most pressing humanitarian issues, with thousands of refugees seeking shelter in makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar. Fleeing persecution in Myanmar, these displaced people arrive exhausted, with little more than the clothes on their backs. Life in the camps is a daily struggle for survival, with overcrowding, food shortages, and limited access to healthcare.

Walking through the camps, one cannot ignore the dire conditions. Families live in fragile bamboo huts covered with plastic sheets, offering little protection from the elements. Many refugees recount harrowing journeys, trekking for days without food or water. Their suffering doesn’t end upon arrival, as they face new challenges in the cramped settlements.

The lack of proper sanitation and clean water increases the risk of disease outbreaks. Malnutrition is widespread, particularly among children, who suffer from stunted growth and weakened immune systems. Medical teams work tirelessly, but the demand far exceeds available resources. Clinics operate under extreme pressure, struggling to provide essential care with limited medicine and staff.

Education is another critical concern. Thousands of children in the camps have no access to formal schooling, leaving their future uncertain. Some makeshift learning centers exist, but they lack trained teachers and adequate materials. Without proper education, an entire generation risks being left behind, trapped in a cycle of poverty and dependence.

Despite these hardships, the resilience of the Rohingya people is evident. They have built small communities within the camps, supporting one another through shared struggles. Local and international organizations continue their efforts to provide aid, but the situation remains precarious.

Temporary relief is not enough. The global community must take meaningful steps toward a long-term solution, ensuring safety, dignity, and a future for the Rohingya people. Without decisive action, this crisis will continue to deepen, leaving thousands in desperate conditions with no way forward
