Plastic Pollution: A Great Threat to Our Environment

Staff Reporter, The Daily Star, Dhaka, September 5

Plastic pollution has become one of the most dangerous environmental problems in Bangladesh and around the world. Because plastic is very cheap, lightweight, and easy to use, people use it for almost everything. However, this over-use of plastic is silently destroying our beautiful environment.

The biggest problem with plastic is that it does not rot or mix with the soil. Once a plastic bottle or polythene bag is thrown away, it stays in the environment for hundreds of years. People carelessly throw plastic waste on the streets, in the fields, and into the rivers. This ruins the natural fertility of the soil, meaning farmers cannot grow good crops.

Moreover, when plastic garbage is burned in the open air, it produces dark, toxic smoke. This smoke causes severe air pollution and leads to deadly diseases like asthma and lung cancer. Plastic also destroys the natural beauty of our cities and villages.

We cannot let this destruction continue. To save our environment, we must strictly ban the use of single-use plastics like polythene bags, plastic cups, and straws. Instead, we should use eco-friendly alternatives like jute bags and paper cups. The government must punish those who produce illegal polythene. Above all, massive public awareness is required to teach people about the deadly effects of plastic.

Plastic Waste is Destroying Our Rivers and Oceans

Staff Correspondent, The Daily Star, Dhaka, September 7

Plastic pollution has turned into a massive disaster for the rivers and water bodies of Bangladesh. Every day, thousands of tons of plastic waste are directly dumped into our rivers, canals, and ultimately, the ocean. This careless action is severely damaging the marine ecosystem.

If we look at the Buriganga or Turag river, we will see a thick layer of plastic bottles, polythene bags, and food wrappers floating on the water. This plastic waste completely blocks the natural flow of the rivers. The most heartbreaking part is the suffering of marine life. Fishes, turtles, and aquatic birds often mistake small plastic pieces for food. When they eat this plastic, it blocks their stomachs, and they die a very painful death. Sometimes, sea animals get badly trapped inside plastic nets and cannot breathe.

Furthermore, over time, large plastics break down into tiny, invisible pieces called "microplastics." These microplastics are swallowed by fishes. When humans eat those fishes, the toxic plastic enters our bodies, causing serious health problems.

To save our rivers and marine life, dumping plastic into water bodies must be stopped immediately. The city corporations must set up proper waste management systems so that garbage does not reach the rivers. Citizens must be sensible and stop throwing plastic packets into the water. Protecting our rivers means protecting our own lives.

Polythene Bags: The Main Cause of Waterlogging in Cities

Special Reporter, Dhaka Tribune, September 9

During the rainy season, sudden waterlogging is a very common and painful problem for the residents of Dhaka and other big cities. While heavy rainfall is partly responsible, the main culprit behind this artificial flood is the reckless use and improper disposal of plastic polythene bags.

Millions of polythene bags are used every day in the city markets and grocery shops. After a single use, people carelessly throw these bags on the streets and into open drains. Because plastic does not decay, these bags easily travel through the rainwater and completely block the city's underground drainage system. As a result, even after a short shower of rain, the water cannot pass through the drains.

Consequently, dirty drain water overflows onto the main roads, entering houses, shops, and schools. This creates massive traffic jams, paralyzes city life, and spreads waterborne diseases like cholera and diarrhea. Students cannot go to school, and office-goers suffer immensely on the flooded streets.

Although there is a strict law banning the production and use of polythene bags, it is completely ignored. To solve the waterlogging crisis, the government must execute the anti-polythene law with zero tolerance. Regular cleaning of city drains is essential. People must also change their habits and carry reusable bags when going to the market.

A highly inspiring and successful "Plastic Pollution Awareness Campaign" was organized yesterday at the Dhaka City College auditorium. The college's Science Club arranged this day-long event to educate students and local people about the terrible dangers of plastic use and how to keep the environment clean.

The program started at 10:00 AM with a colorful rally. Hundreds of students, carrying beautiful placards and banners with anti-plastic slogans, marched through the nearby streets. After the rally, a seminar was held in the auditorium. The Principal of the college presided over the event, while a famous environmental scientist was present as the chief guest.

In his speech, the chief guest clearly explained how single-use plastics are silently destroying our soil, rivers, and health. He warned the students about the invisible "microplastics" that are secretly entering our food chain. He urged the young generation to say "No" to plastic bags, bottles, and straws. The students actively participated in a question-and-answer session and promised to use eco-friendly products like jute and paper bags.

Finally, the students formed several volunteer groups and cleaned the plastic garbage from the college campus and surrounding areas. Report 5: Focus on Health Hazards

The Silent Killer: Severe Health Hazards of Plastic Pollution

Staff Reporter, The Daily Sun, Dhaka, September 15

While most people know that plastic makes our cities dirty, very few realize that plastic pollution is actually a silent killer severely harming human health. From the moment plastic is produced in factories to the time it is thrown away, it continuously releases toxic chemicals into our environment, putting our lives at great risk.

One of the most dangerous practices in our country is burning plastic garbage in open spaces. When polythene and plastic items are burnt, they release highly poisonous gases into the air. Breathing this toxic smoke directly damages our lungs and causes severe respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and even lung cancer. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this poisonous air.

Moreover, we frequently use cheap plastic containers and polythene bags to carry hot food and drinks. When hot food touches low-quality plastic, harmful chemicals melt and mix with our daily meals. Eating this contaminated food slowly damages our liver, kidneys, and nervous system over time. Furthermore, scientists have recently discovered tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, in human blood, which is a terrifying warning for our future.

To protect our health, we must completely stop burning plastic waste in the open air. We should strictly avoid using plastic plates, cups, and polythene bags for hot food. Replacing plastic with safe glass, steel, or clay pots is the only way to save our health from this invisible poison.
