Mosquito Menace: A Nightmarish Experience for City Dwellers

The mosquito menace in Dhaka city has recently taken a terrible turn, making the daily lives of the city dwellers completely unbearable. As soon as the sun sets, swarms of mosquitoes attack the houses. However, the fear is not limited to the night anymore; dangerous mosquitoes bite during the daytime as well.

The main reason behind this rapid increase in mosquitoes is the dirty environment and stagnant water. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season creates hundreds of small puddles across the city. Mosquitoes easily lay their eggs and reproduce quickly in these stagnant water bodies, open drains, and garbage dumps.

This severe mosquito menace has brought deadly diseases like Dengue and Malaria to our doorsteps. Thousands of people, especially children and the elderly, are getting admitted to hospitals with high fever. The city corporation authorities spray insecticides occasionally, but it is highly insufficient to control this massive problem.

To save the citizens from this deadly menace, both the government and the common people must work together. The city corporation must clean the open drains regularly and spray effective mosquito repellents in every ward. At the same time, people must keep their houses and yards clean. We should always sleep under mosquito nets and ensure that water does not remain stagnant in flower pots or discarded tires.

Alarming Rise of Dengue Fever: Hospitals Struggle with Patients

An alarming outbreak of Dengue fever has gripped the capital city, spreading severe panic among the citizens. Over the past few weeks, the number of Dengue-infected patients has skyrocketed. Government and private hospitals are now struggling to accommodate the massive rush of patients, with many people being forced to receive treatment on the hospital floors.

Dengue is a dangerous viral fever transmitted by the bite of the Aedes mosquito. Unlike ordinary mosquitoes, the Aedes mosquito usually bites during the early morning and late afternoon. It breeds in clean, stagnant water trapped in discarded plastic bottles, coconut shells, flower tubs, and rooftop gardens. The primary symptoms of Dengue include sudden high fever, severe headache, severe joint and muscle pain, and skin rashes. In critical condition, the blood platelet count of the patient drops dangerously low, which can easily lead to a tragic death if not treated immediately.

The situation is worsening because many people are unaware of the breeding habits of the Aedes mosquito. To combat this deadly outbreak, the health ministry has issued special guidelines for citizens. The city authorities must immediately run a massive drive to destroy all mosquito breeding grounds. Citizens must also be proactive by cleaning their surroundings every three days. Only widespread public awareness and collective action can eradicate this fatal disease.

The Silent Suffering: Chikungunya Epidemic Sweeps Across the City

Alongside the fear of Dengue, another terrifying mosquito-borne disease, Chikungunya, has recently started sweeping across Bangladesh. While it is rarely fatal compared to Dengue, Chikungunya causes intense, prolonged physical suffering, practically crippling the affected patients for weeks or even months.

Like Dengue, Chikungunya is also spread to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. The symptoms appear suddenly with a high fever, followed by agonizing pain in multiple joints, extreme weakness, and red rashes all over the body. The most distressing aspect of this disease is that even after the fever subsides within a week, the severe joint pain persists. Many recovering patients cannot walk properly, climb stairs, or perform their daily professional duties for several months, leading to a massive loss of working hours in the country.

Unfortunately, there is currently no specific vaccine or exclusive medicine for the Chikungunya virus. Doctors mainly advise patients to take complete bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take basic painkillers like paracetamol. Therefore, absolute prevention is the only effective cure. Since Aedes mosquitoes thrive in clear water around our own households, citizens must take personal responsibility. Cleaning rooftop gardens, removing unused pots, and heavily applying mosquito repellents are essential steps to protect our families from this crippling viral disease.

The rapid proliferation of mosquito-borne diseases, particularly Dengue and Chikungunya, has created a severe public health crisis in the urban areas of Bangladesh. Every monsoon, the nation witnesses a tragic repetition of the same epidemic, exposing the acute vulnerability of our heavily populated cities and the limitations of our civic management systems.

The core of this crisis lies in unplanned urbanization and erratic weather patterns. The Aedes mosquito, the primary vector for both Dengue and Chikungunya, thrives remarkably well in urban environments. Ongoing mega-construction projects, abandoned plots, and poorly maintained drainage systems serve as perfect incubators for these deadly insects. While Dengue frequently leads to a fatal drop in blood platelets, Chikungunya leaves its victims with debilitating, chronic joint pain that severely impacts their long-term quality of life and economic productivity.
