Meghna Launch Capsize Death Toll 43

Staff Correspondent, Motijeel,Dhaka, Dhaka, March 9, 2022: The death toll from Friday’s launch capsize in Meghna rose to 14 as rescuers recovered 12 more bodies on Saturday. Rescuers recovered two bodies in the place after the launch, the ML Saros, had capsized in the river at Gazaria in Munshiganj after being hit with a cargo vessel carrying sand about 7:30 am Friday. The launch was going from Narayanganj to Matlab in Chandpur.The passenger launch carrying over 150 passengers capsized Monday afternoon as it caught in storms, leaving dozens of people missing.

Soon after the mishap, local people recovered four bodies from the river on Monday evening.  Later, the rescue workers pulled up 39 more bodies from the sunken launch on Tuesday, raising the death toll to 43. The one-member committee headed by Kazi Saiful Islam has made its inquiry report public, saying that the capsize was mainly caused by overloading of passengers and goods on the launch.

Meanwhile, the district administration provided 4,000 taka (about 63 U.S. dollars) as grant to each of the 33 families of the capsized victims. Remaining families will also be provided with the money. A police boat was patrolling the river looking for more bodies.

The double-deck passenger carrier, MV Sunlight-7, sank near the Lauhajang channel in Munshiganj at around 8:00 a.m. on Friday after being struck head-on by a reckless, sand-laden cargo bulk carrier amid heavy fog.

The ill-fated passenger vessel was journeying from Dhaka's Sadarghat terminal to Shariatpur with over 180 commuters onboard. Eyewitnesses reported that the vessel overturned within minutes, plunging sleeping passengers into the turbulent vortex of the river.

Local fishermen and river police immediately rushed to the spot, managing to rescue nearly 50 survivors before nightfall. However, strong undercurrents and zero visibility hampered initial operations. A three-member judicial inquiry committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate Mizanur Rahman, released its preliminary findings yesterday, attributing the catastrophe to severe overloading, gross violation of navigation rules, and reckless maneuvering by the cargo vessel.

Meanwhile, the district administration has announced an immediate cash grant of Tk 25,000 for each bereaved family to cover funeral expenses. Coast Guard patrol boats continue their relentless search downstream to locate several other passengers who remain unaccounted for.

তানভীর হোসেন, স্টাফ রিপোর্টার, ঢাকা, ২২ জুলাই, ২০২৬: নিমজ্জিত লঞ্চ থেকে নৌবাহিনী ও ফায়ার সার্ভিসের ডুবুরিরা আরও ১৮টি মরদেহ উদ্ধার করায় গত শুক্রবার পদ্মা নদীতে ঘটিত মর্মান্তিক লঞ্চ সংঘর্ষে মৃতের সংখ্যা বেড়ে ৩২ জনে দাঁড়িয়েছে। ঘন কুয়াশার মধ্যে বালুবাহী একটি বেপরোয়া কার্গোর সাথে মুখোমুখি ধাক্কায় গত শুক্রবার সকাল ৮টার দিকে মুন্সিগঞ্জের লৌহজং চ্যানেলের কাছে দোতলা যাত্রীবাহী লঞ্চ এমভি সানলাইট-৭ ডুবে যায়।

দুর্ঘটনার শিকার যাত্রীবাহী জলযানটি ১৮০ জনেরও বেশি যাত্রী নিয়ে ঢাকার সদরঘাট টার্মিনাল থেকে শরীয়তপুরের দিকে যাচ্ছিল। প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, সংঘর্ষের মাত্র কয়েক মিনিটের মধ্যে লঞ্চটি উল্টে যায় এবং ঘুমন্ত যাত্রীদের উত্তাল নদীর ঘূর্ণিপাকে ফেলে দেয়।

Passenger Launch Sinks in Shitalakshya River, 20 Dead

Local Correspondent, Narayanganj, August 14, 2026: At least 20 people, including women and children, lost their lives when an overloaded passenger launch sank in the Shitalakshya River yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred near the Bandar upazila ghat when a fast-moving oil tanker hit the small passenger vessel, named MV Al-Badr, causing it to capsize instantly.

The launch was carrying about 120 passengers from Narayanganj toward Cumilla. Because the vessel was packed beyond its capacity, many passengers could not escape when water rushed inside. Local boatmen and villagers showed great courage by jumping into the river and saving nearly 70 people.

Fire service divers arrived shortly after and worked hard through the night. By Saturday morning, they pulled 20 dead bodies from the sunken wreck. The local administration has formed a committee to investigate why the cargo ship hit the launch.

Angry locals gathered at the riverbank, demanding strict punishment for the greedy ship owners who ignore safety rules. The government has promised to give financial help to the families of the victims, while search operations are still going on for the missing persons.

নৌকাটি প্রায় ১২০ জন যাত্রী নিয়ে নারায়ণগঞ্জ থেকে কুমিল্লার দিকে যাচ্ছিল। ধারণক্ষমতার চেয়ে বেশি যাত্রী থাকায় লঞ্চের ভেতরে পানি ঢুকে পড়ায় অনেক যাত্রী বের হতে পারেননি। স্থানীয় মাঝি ও গ্রামিণ মানুষ নদীতে ঝাঁপ দিয়ে প্রায় ৭০ জনকে বাঁচিয়ে দারুণ সাহসিকতার পরিচয় দেন।

Bad Launch Accident in Barishal River

Staff Reporter, Barishal, September 5, 2026: Yesterday, a very sad boat accident happened on the river near Barishal. A small launch carrying many people sank into the deep water after hitting a big sand truck boat.

The launch was going from a village market to the town. There were too many people inside, and people had packed their bags tightly. When the big boat hit it, everyone started screaming in fear. The water was very cold, and the river current was strong.

Some good local people came with small boats and pulled 30 passengers out of the water. But sadly, 15 people could not swim and died under the water. Fire men came later and took the dead bodies out.

The government officers gave some money to the crying family members. Everyone is saying that taking too many people on a boat is a very bad crime. People must be careful so that such sad things do not happen again.

স্টাফ রিপোর্টার, বরিশাল, ৫ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০২৬: গতকাল বরিশালের কাছের নদীতে খুব দুঃখজনক একটি নৌ দুর্ঘটনা ঘটেছে। অনেক মানুষ বহনকারী একটি ছোট লঞ্চ বড় একটি বালুবাহী ট্রলারের সাথে ধাক্কা খেয়ে গভীর পানিতে ডুবে যায়।

লঞ্চটি একটি গ্রামের বাজার থেকে শহরের দিকে যাচ্ছিল। এর ভেতরে অতিরিক্ত লোক ছিল এবং মানুষ ঠাসাঠাসি করে ব্যাগপত্র রেখেছিল। বড় নৌকাটি ধাক্কা মারামারি করার পর সবাই ভয়ে চিৎকার শুরু করে। পানি খুব ঠান্ডা ছিল এবং নদীর স্রোতও ছিল প্রবল।

কিছু ভালো স্থানীয় মানুষ ছোট নৌকা নিয়ে এসে ৩০ জন যাত্রীকে পানি থেকে তুলে নেন। কিন্তু দুঃখের বিষয়, ১৫ জন মানুষ সাঁতার কাটতে না পেরে পানির নিচে মারা যান। ফায়ার সার্ভিসের কর্মীরা পরে এসে মরদেহগুলো তুলে নেন।

কান্নারত পরিবারের সদস্যদের কিছু টাকা দিয়েছেন সরকারি কর্মকর্তারা। সবাই বলছেন লঞ্চে অতিরিক্ত মানুষ তোলা একটি খুব খারাপ অপরাধ। এমন দুঃখজনক ঘটনা যেন আর না ঘটে সেজন্য সবাইকে সতর্ক থাকতে হবে।]
