Illegal Hunting: Migratory Birds Face Extinction

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, July 5, 2025: It is a very shocking news that various species of the migratory birds flying into Bangladesh from Siberia during the winter months are being hunted indiscriminately. It is illegal to hunt any animal species, particularly birds, in the country for pleasure and it’s disappointing that it still happens – that people still don’t see the benefits of wildlife. On their migratory routes the birds have to overcome enormous obstacles. Birds may be shot, caught in nets, become glued to branches for subsistence, recreational activities and traditional practice. Poisoning causes high mortality in migratory birds.  Illegal trade in vultures and other raptors is contributing to their decline. Parts of their bodies are in high demand and traded as bush meat or for traditional medicine and witchcraft. The birds are secretly served as a delicacy in restaurants and homes throughout the country. Initiated in 2006, World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated each year to highlight the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats. Bangladesh government has undertaken some key actions to end illegal killing of birds. A task force has recently been established to implement the Plan of Action and to stop killing them.

By joining forces and starting dialogues between all social groups and decision makers involved we can make migratory bird flyways safer places and preserve a healthy and rich environment for humans as well.

Rampant Poaching of Migratory Birds in Hakaluki Haor Threatens Biodiversity

Tanvir Hossain, Staff Reporter, Sylhet, January 15, 2026: The majestic wetlands of Hakaluki Haor in northeastern Bangladesh have once again turned into slaughterhouses for migratory birds arriving from the freezing plains of Siberia and Central Asia. Despite strict legal prohibitions under wildlife conservation laws, ruthless poachers are indiscriminately trapping, shooting, and poisoning thousands of winter guest birds every night.

Environmental organizations report that local commercial syndicates use sophisticated mist nets, lethal insecticides mixed in grain, and improvised firearms to catch these winged visitors. The poached birds are then secretly smuggled and sold at high prices to upscale restaurants and illicit local markets, where they are consumed as exotic delicacies. Furthermore, traditional beliefs surrounding the medicinal value of certain raptor body parts drive an aggressive black market trade.

This ruthless slaughter has severely disrupted the ecological balance of the wetland sanctuary, causing a sharp decline in rare avian species such as the Bar-headed Goose and Common Pochard. Although the local forest department and district administration occasionally conduct sudden anti-poaching raids, conservationists argue that these measures are insufficient without active community policing.

Environmental activists have strongly urged the government to establish permanent wildlife camps around critical wetland zones, enforce heavy penal consequences for wildlife traffickers, and launch nationwide awareness campaigns to protect our natural heritage.

তানভীর হোসেন, স্টাফ রিপোর্টার, সিলেট, ১৫ জানুয়ারি, ২০২৬: সাইবেরিয়া ও মধ্য এশিয়ার বরফাবৃত প্রান্তর থেকে আসা অতিথি পাখিদের জন্য উত্তর-পূর্বাঞ্চলের হাকালুকি হাওরের নৈসর্গিক জলাভূমিগুলো আবারও কসাইখানায় পরিণত হয়েছে। বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণ আইনের কঠোর নিষেধাজ্ঞা সত্ত্বেও নিষ্ঠুর শিকারিরা প্রতিদিন রাতে হাজার হাজার শীতের অতিথি পাখিদের নির্বিচারে ফাঁদ পেতে, গুলি করে ও বিষ প্রয়োগ করে হত্যা করছে।

পরিবেশবাদী সংগঠনগুলো জানিয়েছে যে স্থানীয় বাণিজ্যিক চক্রগুলো এই পাখিদের ধরার জন্য আধুনিক জাল, দানার সাথে মিশ্রিত বিষাক্ত কীটনাশক এবং দেশি বন্দুক ব্যবহার করছে। শিকার করা পাখিগুলো এরপর গোপনে পাচার করা হয় এবং উচ্চমূল্যে অভিজাত রেস্তোরাঁ ও অবৈধ স্থানীয় বাজারে সুস্বাদু খাবার হিসেবে বিক্রি করা হয়। তাছাড়া, কিছু শিকার করা পাখির দেহের অংশের ঔষধি গুণ রয়েছে—এমন অন্ধবিশ্বাসের কারণে একটি অবৈধ কালো বাজার রমরমা হয়ে উঠেছে।

Cruel Hunting of Migratory Birds in Char Lands of Patuakhali

Local Correspondent, Patuakhali, February 10, 2026: Every winter, thousands of beautiful migratory birds fly thousands of miles to visit the green chars and coastal rivers of Patuakhali. Sadly, instead of finding a safe home, many of these lovely birds fall victim to greedy hunters who kill them for money and fun.

Local villagers report that hunters set up hidden traps and use poisoned baits in the early morning hours when the birds search for food in the muddy fields. These poor birds are caught and openly sold in local village markets or served secretly in roadside hotels. Because of this cruel practice, the number of guest birds is decreasing every single year, destroying the natural beauty of our coastal areas.

Although killing wildlife is a punishable crime in our country, lack of regular police patrolling makes it easy for poachers to continue their illegal business. School students and local nature lovers recently organized a peaceful protest rally holding banners that read "Save Migratory Birds, Protect Our Environment."

District authorities have promised to take strict action against anyone found hunting birds. Local people must also cooperate with the administration by reporting poachers so that these innocent travelers can fly safely back to their homes.

We Must Stop Killing Winter Birds

Staff Reporter, Rajshahi, December 20, 2026: Every year when winter comes, many pretty birds come from cold foreign countries to stay in our country's rivers and lakes. They look very nice when they fly together in the blue sky. But some bad people catch and kill these sweet birds for fun and money.

Hunters use sticky nets and bad poison to trap the birds near water fields. This is a very cruel and bad work. Birds give us happiness and keep our nature clean and beautiful. If people kill them all, our children will never see these wonderful creatures in the future.

The government has made laws to protect all kinds of birds. Police officers catch hunters when they find them. But we must also help. If we see anyone hunting birds in our village or town, we should tell our teachers or village leaders immediately.

Let us promise that we will never hurt any bird. We will protect them so they can fly safely and happily in our country every winter.

স্টাফ রিপোর্টার, রাজশাহী, ২০ ডিসেম্বর, ২০২৬: প্রতি বছর শীতকালে ঠান্ডা বিদেশ থেকে অনেক সুন্দর সুন্দর পাখি আমাদের দেশের নদী ও খালে এসে থাকে। নীল আকাশে যখন তারা একসাথে উড়ে বেড়ায়, তখন তাদের দেখতে খুব ভালো লাগে। কিন্তু কিছু খারাপ মানুষ আনন্দ ও টাকার জন্য এই মিষ্টি পাখিগুলোকে ধরে ও মেরে ফেলে।

শিকারিরা জলাভূমির কাছাকাছি পাখিদের ধরার জন্য আঠালো জাল এবং খারাপ বিষ ব্যবহার করে। এটি একটি অত্যন্ত নিষ্ঠুর ও খারাপ কাজ। পাখিরা আমাদের আনন্দ দেয় এবং আমাদের প্রকৃতিকে পরিষ্কার ও সুন্দর রাখে। মানুষ যদি তাদের সবাইকেই মেরে ফেলে, তবে আমাদের শিশুরা ভবিষ্যতে এই চমৎকার প্রাণীগুলোকে আর কখনো দেখতে পাবে না।

সব ধরনের পাখি সুরক্ষার জন্য সরকার আইন তৈরি করেছে। পুলিশ অফিসাররা শিকারিদের পেলে ধরে ফেলেন। কিন্তু আমাদেরও সাহায্য করতে হবে। আমাদের গ্রাম বা শহরে কেউ পাখি শিকার করলে আমাদের সাথে সাথে শিক্ষক বা গ্রামপ্রধানকে জানাতে হবে।

আসুন আমরা প্রতিশ্রুতি দিই যে আমরা কখনই কোনো পাখিকে আঘাত করব না। আমরা তাদের রক্ষা করব যাতে তারা প্রতি শীতে আমাদের দেশে নিরাপদে ও আনন্দে উড়ে বেড়াতে পারে।]
