Deforestation Posing Threat to Ecology

“Bangladesh is always faced with a constant threat from the ecological imbalance and the reckless deforestation is adding to this problem day by day,” Mr Aminul Huq, President of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon said.

Bangladesh, with a forest cover estimated at 17.08% of all land surface area, has experienced massive degradation of its natural resources and a considerable change in its land cover. While deforestation in Bangladesh is obviously a complex issue, one important aspect emerges from previous research findings in explaining deforestation: industrialization.

This study has focused on the causes of deforestation in Bangladesh, particularly in tropical moist deciduous Sal forests, using multi levels factor analysis framework. Illegal logging is a complex phenomenon and is being patronized by a local syndicate, functioning from behind the scenes. Therefore, the immediate task of the nation would be to stop illegal logging and land conversion of Sal forests. This can be done by involving all relevant stakeholders in the form of effective forest policy formulation and execution of strict environmental protection law. 

Deforestation affects the earth’s physical environment by causing soil erosion, poor water quality, reduced food security and impaired flood protection, according to a report from the World Resources Institute. Because forests are the source of employment and food for many people, their destruction can cause mass migration to cities. With the influence that tropical forests have on weather, particularly rain, deforestation can cause altered weather patterns.

On the World Environment Day Sheikh Hasina, the Premier of Bangladesh, has urged in the tree plantation programme 2022 inauguration ceremony on 5 June 2022, “‘Please plant trees wherever you can to protect environment. We want to create a green nature which is most important for our food security, nutrition, health and happiness”.

Reckless Destruction of Madhupur Sal Forests Threatens Regional Ecosystem

Tanvir Ahmed, Staff Reporter, Tangail, August 14, 2026: Environmental experts have raised a red flag over the alarming rate of deforestation in the historic Sal forests of Madhupur, terming it a direct assault on the country's biodiversity. A recent environmental assessment report reveals that illegal timber syndicates, in collusion with corrupt local circles, are ruthlessly cutting down ancient trees to clear land for commercial brick kilns and unauthorized agricultural expansions.

During a recent field investigation in the Garo Hills tract, acres of once-dense canopy were found reduced to barren patches. Dr. Nazmul Alam, an ecologist and professor at Jahangirnagar University, warned that this unchecked destruction is severely disrupting local wildlife habitats, causing severe soil erosion, and altering the region's microclimate. "When you destroy natural forest buffers, you invite erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and accelerated groundwater depletion," he noted during a seminar held at a local college auditorium.

Furthermore, local indigenous communities who depend on the forest for their traditional livelihoods are facing displacement and food insecurity. Civil society groups have strongly urged the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to deploy forest rangers, enforce stringent anti-logging laws, and initiate large-scale afforestation drives with native saplings before this vital ecological sanctuary is permanently lost.

গারো পাহাড়ি অঞ্চলে সম্প্রতি এক অনুসন্ধানে দেখা গেছে, একসময়ের ঘন বনাঞ্চল এখন টেকসইহীন খালি জমিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পরিবেশবিদ ও অধ্যাপক ড. নাজমুল আলম সতর্ক করে বলেছেন যে এই অবাধ ধ্বংসযজ্ঞ স্থানীয় বন্যপ্রাণীর আবাসস্থলকে মারাত্মকভাবে ব্যাহত করছে, তীব্র ভূমি ক্ষয় ঘটাচ্ছে এবং স্থানীয় আবহাওয়া পরিবর্তন করছে। স্থানীয় একটি কলেজ মিলনায়তনে আয়োজিত সেমিনারে তিনি বলেন, "যখন আপনি প্রাকৃতিক বনের রক্ষাকবচ ধ্বংস করবেন, তখন অনিয়মিত বৃষ্টিপাত, দীর্ঘস্থায়ী খরা এবং দ্রুত ভূগর্ভস্থ পানির স্তর নেমে যাওয়া অনিবার্য হয়ে পড়বে।"

Indiscriminate Tree Felling Poses Grave Threat to Environment

Local Correspondent, Sylhet, July 20, 2026: Environmental degradation is worsening rapidly across Bangladesh due to continuous deforestation and illegal tree cutting. Recently, local people and nature lovers in Sylhet have expressed deep concern over the massive loss of green cover in the hilly regions.

Unscrupulous timber traders are cutting down trees day and night to supply wood to local sawmills and furniture shops. Because of this reckless logging, the natural beauty of the hills is vanishing, and wild animals are losing their safe shelters. Furthermore, the absence of tree roots causes massive landslides during heavy monsoon rains, threatening the lives of villagers living at the foot of the hills.

On the occasion of National Tree Plantation Week, local environmental organizations organized a rally to create public awareness. Speakers at the event emphasized that trees are our best friends because they provide oxygen, bring rainfall, and protect the soil. They urged everyone to plant at least three saplings around their homes. The government and local authorities must take strict legal action against illegal tree cutters to save our green environment for future generations.

We Must Stop Cutting Down Trees

Staff Reporter, Rajshahi, June 10, 2026: Trees are very important for our life on earth. But nowadays, many bad people are cutting down green trees from forests and villages. This bad habit is making our environment dirty and dangerous.

When people cut down too many trees, the weather becomes very hot. There is less rain, and the land becomes dry. Sometimes, bad floods happen because there are no trees to hold the soil tightly. Animals and birds also die or run away because they lose their homes in the jungle.

To keep our country green and safe, we must plant more trees. Planting trees is very easy. We can put small plants in our school gardens, near our houses, and beside roads. Our teachers always tell us to love nature and take care of small plants. If everyone plants a tree today, our country will become beautiful and happy tomorrow. We must stop cutting trees right now and save our green world.

[আমাদের অবশ্যই গাছ কাটা বন্ধ করতে হবে

স্টাফ রিপোর্টার, রাজশাহী, ১০ জুন, ২০২৬: এই পৃথিবীতে আমাদের বেঁচে থাকার জন্য গাছ অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কিন্তু আজকাল অনেক খারাপ মানুষ বন ও গ্রামের সবুজ গাছপালা কেটে ফেলছে। এই খারাপ অভ্যাসের কারণে আমাদের পরিবেশ নোংরা ও বিপজ্জনক হয়ে উঠছে।

মানুষ যখন অতিরিক্ত গাছ কেটে ফেলে, তখন আবহাওয়া অনেক গরম হয়ে যায়। বৃষ্টি কমে যায় এবং জমি শুষ্ক হয়ে যায়। কখনো কখনো তীব্র বন্যা দেখা দেয় কারণ মাটি শক্ত করে ধরে রাখার মতো কোনো গাছ থাকে না। জঙ্গল নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়ায় পশুপাখিরাও মারা যায় বা পালিয়ে যায়।

আমাদের দেশটিকে সবুজ ও নিরাপদ রাখতে আমাদের আরও গাছ লাগাতে হবে। গাছ লাগানো খুব সহজ। আমরা আমাদের স্কুলের বাগান, বাড়ির আশপাশে এবং রাস্তার ধারে ছোট চারা গাছ লাগাতে পারি। আমাদের শিক্ষকরা সবসময় আমাদের প্রকৃতিকে ভালোবাসতে এবং ছোট চারাগুলোর যত্ন নিতে বলেন। আজ যদি সবাই একটি করে গাছ লাগায়, তবে আমাদের দেশ আগামীকাল সুন্দর ও সুখী হয়ে উঠবে। আমাদের এখনই গাছ কাটা বন্ধ করতে হবে এবং আমাদের সবুজ পৃথিবীকে রক্ষা করতে হবে।]

Forests Disappearing: A Growing Danger

Bangladesh is losing its forests at an alarming rate, leading to serious environmental problems. Trees play a crucial role in maintaining balance in nature, but rapid deforestation is disrupting this balance. Experts warn that if this continues, the country will face severe consequences, including extreme weather conditions and loss of biodiversity.

Currently, forests cover only about 17% of Bangladesh’s land. Over the years, large areas of greenery have been cleared for urban expansion, agriculture, and industries. One of the biggest threats to forests is illegal logging. Powerful groups secretly cut down trees for profit, making it difficult to stop the destruction.

The loss of forests affects people in many ways. Trees help prevent soil erosion, purify water, and reduce the risk of floods. When forests disappear, the land becomes weak, and natural disasters become more frequent. Many people rely on forests for food, firewood, and income, so deforestation forces them to leave their homes and migrate to cities in search of work. Additionally, trees help control the climate by absorbing carbon dioxide, so losing them contributes to rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall.

To address this crisis, strong action is needed. The government must strictly enforce environmental laws and take steps to stop illegal tree cutting. Community participation is also essential—people should be encouraged to plant trees and protect existing forests. Schools, businesses, and local organizations can play a role in spreading awareness.

On World Environment Day (5 June 2022), Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged citizens to plant more trees. She emphasized that a green and healthy environment is necessary for the well-being of all. By working together, Bangladesh can protect its forests and ensure a safer future for the next generations.
