Mahasen Turns Thousands of Farmers into Paupers

Staff Correspondence, The Daily Star, Patuakhali, May, 2022: Crops on one lakh 28 thousand hectares of land in the district have been totally damaged as cyclone Mahasen hit the coastal region on 16th instant.

The croplands went under water as tidal surges washed away flood control embankments at many places during the cyclone. This correspondent visited some of the worst affected areas on Friday and talked to local farmers.

Abdul Jalil Howlader (50), a marginal farmer of Chandkathi village of Galachipa upazila, said he cultivated ground nuts, chilli and pulses on 0.40 acres of land but all the crops went under water.

“I would have reaped the crops only after 15 to 20 days but the cyclone frustrated all my hopes,” said Jalil who along with his wife and granddaughter were trying to remove rainwater from his chilli field.

Alauddin Mia (55), another farmer from Rangabali Upazila, said he cultivated crops on three acres of land but all the fields have been flooded and now he is passing miserable days with his family. Standing crops on five acres of land of Shawkat Hossain and four acres of land of Mohammad Rased in the same village also got damaged in the same way.

In Rangabali, 90 percent of the farmers have been affected by the cyclone. They need immediate help from government or non government level to resume their cultivation, said Md Liakat Ali, Upazila Nirbahi Officer.

At least 2 died in Patuakhali and Bhola as the Cyclone Mahasen hits the coastal area around 9:00am on 16th May.

Cyclone Remal Devastates Coastal Farmlands in Barguna

Staff Reporter, Barguna, May 28, 2024: Standing crops on over ninety thousand hectares of land in Barguna district have faced total destruction following a ferocious cyclone that battered the southern coastal belt yesterday morning. The powerful storm triggered tidal surges that breached mud embankments, submerging vast agricultural tracts under saline water.

During a field visit to the worst-hit Patharghata upazila, local farmers shared harrowing tales of loss. Delwar Hossain (48), a marginal farmer from Kakchira village, had cultivated Boro paddy and summer vegetables on two acres of land. "Just a few more weeks and I would have harvested everything to pay off my loans, but Cyclone Remal destroyed it all in a single night," he lamented while trying to clear mud from his ruined fields.

Another farmer, Moniruzzaman (52), reported that his entire sesame and chilli cultivation across three acres went underwater. Local agriculture officials noted that nearly eighty-five percent of farmers in the upazila have suffered catastrophic damage. Immediate financial assistance, seed distribution, and soft loans are urgently required to help these devastated families restart farming.

সর্বাধিক ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত পাথরঘাটা উপজেলা পরিদর্শনে গিয়ে স্থানীয় কৃষকরা তাদের মর্মান্তিক ক্ষতির কথা জানান। কাকচিড়া গ্রামের প্রান্তিক কৃষক দেলোয়ার হোসেন (৪৭) দুই একর জমিতে বোরো ধান ও গ্রীষ্মকালীন শাকসবজি চাষ করেছিলেন। "আর মাত্র কিছুদিন পরই সব কেটে ঋণ শোধ করতে পারard, কিন্তু ঘূর্ণিঝড় রেমেল এক রাতেই সবকিছু শেষ করে দিল," নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়া জমি থেকে কাদা সরাতে সরাতে আক্ষেপ করেন তিনি।

Cyclone Sitrang Destroys Crops in Bhola

Local Correspondent, Bhola, October 26, 2022: A terrible cyclone named Sitrang hit the coastal areas of Bhola district recently, destroying standing crops on thousands of acres of land. The heavy rain and strong tidal waves broke protective dams and flooded local farmer's fields with salty water.

When reporters visited Char Fasson upazila, they saw many sad farmers standing beside their ruined lands. Rahim Mia (50), a poor farmer, said he grew vegetables and pulses on one and a half acres of land. He borrowed money from a local NGO to buy seeds, but now everything is under water. "I have no money left and don't know how I will feed my children," he said with tears in his eyes.

Another farmer, Nazrul Islam (45), lost all his paddy crops. The local upazila agriculture officer said that almost ninety percent of farmers in the area lost their crops. The poor villagers are now asking the government for urgent food and financial help to survive this disaster.

Big Storm Ruins Farmer's Crops in Satkhira

Staff Reporter, Satkhira, May 20, 2023: A very strong storm hit Satkhira last week. It brought heavy rain and broke the river dams. Because of this, water entered the villages and ruined all the green crops in the fields.

Many poor farmers lost everything they had planted. Kashem Ali (55) is a farmer from Shyamnagar village. He worked very hard day and night to grow rice on his small land. Now, his whole land is covered with muddy water, and the rice plants are dead. "My family has nothing to eat now," Kashem said sadly.

The local people are very worried. They lost their crops, homes, and money. The government has sent some dry food and rice to help them. But the farmers say they need money and new seeds to grow crops again. Everyone in the village is praying for a better time.
