Corruption Soaring in Bangladesh: A Threat to National Development Staff Correspondent, The Daily Star, Dhaka, June 10
According to the recent reports of the Global Corruption Perception Index, Bangladesh continues to rank among the most corrupt countries in the world, proving that corruption is still an unabated issue in our country. Corruption is sapping the vitality of the nation. It has already taken a demonic shape and remains the biggest challenge for the administration.
It can no longer be called an open secret; it is now an open practice. Corruption prevails from the lowest to the highest tiers of various offices. It has also spread into NGOs, non-government, and autonomous organizations. Despite the introduction of digital services like e-tendering and e-TIN, bribery, extortion, and misuse of power continue to rise.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has frequently pointed out that political and administrative influence on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has often made the commission weak, preventing it from performing properly. If the commission were proactive and completely independent in performing its duties, Bangladesh would have done much better in its fight against corruption.
Corruption paves the way for the rich to become masters and exploit the poor masses. It is the primary reason the rich are becoming richer and the poor poorer. An honest person often struggles to maintain a decent livelihood, while a dishonest individual holding a lucrative position accumulates illegal wealth overnight.
It is high time the government took immediate and stern steps to reduce corruption. Authorities must make the ACC a highly effective organization and let it work freely for combating corruption. Furthermore, social awareness, ethical education, and a strong moral awakening are essential to eliminate this malpractice from the roots of our society.

Rohingya Crisis: A Humanitarian Emergency
Amin, Cox's Bazar, February 1, 2025
The Rohingya refugee camps in Teknaf, near the Myanmar border, house thousands fleeing violence. Overcrowded and lacking basic necessities, refugees struggle for food, clean water, and medical aid.
Families live in flimsy bamboo shelters, many arriving weak and traumatized. Healthcare is critical—malnutrition, infections, and disease outbreaks threaten lives, especially among children. Limited medical facilities make the situation worse.
Education is another crisis. Makeshift schools lack teachers and resources, leaving Rohingya children without a future. Despite hardships, refugees build small support networks, while aid groups provide relief.
However, temporary aid isn't enough. The international community must act now to ensure safety, dignity, and long-term solutions for the Rohingya people.
Struggles of the Rohingya: A Crisis in Cox’s Bazar
Amin, Cox’s Bazar, February 1, 2025
The Rohingya crisis remains one of the most pressing humanitarian issues, with thousands of refugees seeking shelter in makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar. Fleeing persecution in Myanmar, these displaced people arrive exhausted, with little more than the clothes on their backs. Life in the camps is a daily struggle for survival, with overcrowding, food shortages, and limited access to healthcare.
Walking through the camps, one cannot ignore the dire conditions. Families live in fragile bamboo huts covered with plastic sheets, offering little protection from the elements. Many refugees recount harrowing journeys, trekking for days without food or water. Their suffering doesn’t end upon arrival, as they face new challenges in the cramped settlements.
The lack of proper sanitation and clean water increases the risk of disease outbreaks. Malnutrition is widespread, particularly among children, who suffer from stunted growth and weakened immune systems. Medical teams work tirelessly, but the demand far exceeds available resources. Clinics operate under extreme pressure, struggling to provide essential care with limited medicine and staff.
Education is another critical concern. Thousands of children in the camps have no access to formal schooling, leaving their future uncertain. Some makeshift learning centers exist, but they lack trained teachers and adequate materials. Without proper education, an entire generation risks being left behind, trapped in a cycle of poverty and dependence.
Despite these hardships, the resilience of the Rohingya people is evident. They have built small communities within the camps, supporting one another through shared struggles. Local and international organizations continue their efforts to provide aid, but the situation remains precarious.
Temporary relief is not enough. The global community must take meaningful steps toward a long-term solution, ensuring safety, dignity, and a future for the Rohingya people. Without decisive action, this crisis will continue to deepen, leaving thousands in desperate conditions with no way forward
