The ready-made garment sector is the most crucial export earner for the economy of Bangladesh. Millions of dedicated workers, mostly originating from impoverished rural villages, work tirelessly in these massive urban factories. They dedicate their youth and work very hard to make our beloved country economically solvent, but sadly, their own daily lives remain full of profound sorrow and continuous struggle.

The primary problem faced by these hardworking garment workers is their surprisingly low monthly salary. With this insufficient amount of money, it is practically impossible to maintain a standard family in an expensive, growing megacity like Dhaka. They are constantly compelled to work for ten to twelve hours every single day, which routinely includes mandatory overtime, just to earn a little extra income to survive. Because of their poor financial condition, they are forced to reside in extremely dirty, unhygienic, and overcrowded slums. They cannot afford to consume highly nutritious food, nor can they send their beloved children to quality educational institutions. Whenever they fall severely sick, they cannot even visit a specialized doctor or afford the necessary prescribed medicines.

Despite all these immense daily hardships, these dedicated workers remain the true, unsung heroes of our national economy. Therefore, the wealthy factory owners and the government authorities must look after their wellbeing immediately. Their monthly salary should be increased significantly, and their fundamental human rights must be ensured strictly so that they can finally lead a dignified, healthy, and respectable life in our society.

Low Wages Make Survival Difficult for Garment Workers

The garment workers in Bangladesh are currently facing a terrible financial crisis mainly because of the continuous and rapid rise in the prices of daily necessities. While the overall cost of living is going up exponentially every single day, their factory wages have not increased proportionately. This harsh economic imbalance has made their daily survival incredibly difficult and agonizing.

Most ordinary garment workers earn a very basic, minimum salary at the end of the month. After paying the high house rent for their tiny slum rooms, they have very little money remaining for purchasing food and other essentials. Buying protein-rich items like fresh fish, meat, or milk has sadly become an unreachable luxury for them. Most of the time, they are forced to eat only plain rice accompanied by mashed potatoes or the cheapest available vegetables. This poor, unbalanced diet gradually makes them physically weak and vulnerable to various diseases. Furthermore, to buy basic emergency medicine or to pay for their children's primary education, they frequently have to borrow money from local lenders with high interest and inevitably fall into deep, inescapable debt.

It is a very tragic reality that the people who make beautiful and expensive clothes for the entire world cannot even buy a nice, simple dress for their own children during festivals. To save these extremely poor and vulnerable workers from starving, their minimum monthly wage must be raised immediately, accurately reflecting the current market prices of essential goods.

The poor overall health and the unsafe working environment of garment workers remain a matter of great national concern in Bangladesh today. Even though some modern factories have improved their conditions recently, a surprisingly large number of workers still work in very unhealthy, risky environments, which slowly destroys their physical fitness and mental peace.

Inside many older, poorly constructed factories, there is a severe lack of fresh air circulation and proper natural lighting. Hundreds of male and female workers sit closely together in crowded, noisy rooms, constantly breathing in harmful microscopic fabric dust and toxic chemical fumes throughout the entire day. As a direct result of this pollution, many of them suffer chronically from severe asthma, frequent headaches, deteriorating eyesight, and continuous lower back pain. Furthermore, they are treated almost like programmable machines and have to work relentlessly without getting adequate rest periods. Standing or operating sewing machines for unbelievably long hours makes them extremely exhausted. Additionally, there is always the constant, terrifying fear of sudden fire accidents or building collapses in older, poorly maintained factory infrastructures.

A physically and mentally healthy worker can undoubtedly produce more quality output. Therefore, responsible factory owners must proactively provide a completely clean, well-lit, and safe working environment. Every garment factory should strictly guarantee pure drinking water, proper ventilation systems, and absolutely free, regular medical check-up facilities to protect these vulnerable, hardworking people from premature death and lifelong suffering.

The Untold Daily Sufferings of Female Garment Workers

It is a well-known fact that approximately eighty percent of the garment workers in Bangladesh are women. They undeniably play the most important and foundational role in this multi-billion-dollar export industry, but unfortunately, their personal life is a continuous, unbreakable cycle of endless hardship, discrimination, and struggle.

Most of these young women migrate from extremely poor rural families to the capital city, desperately hoping to find a better, financially secure life. However, upon arrival, they essentially have to perform a grueling double duty every single day. After working ten to twelve exhausting hours inside the hot factory, they return to their dark slums and must immediately complete all heavy household chores. This includes cooking meals, washing dirty clothes, cleaning the house, and taking careful care of their young children. Consequently, they get almost zero time to rest or sleep peacefully. Besides this physical exhaustion, female workers sometimes face completely unacceptable bad behavior, cruel verbal abuse, and physical harassment on their daily commute to the workplace or directly from supervisors inside the factory. Moreover, many factories still illegally refuse to provide proper paid maternity leave or safe childcare facilities.

Women undeniably remain the primary driving force behind the immense success of our national garment sector. Therefore, the government and the powerful factory owners must unitedly ensure their absolute workplace safety, give them proper human respect, and provide special necessary facilities like modern day-care centers for their children.

The Inhuman Slum Living Conditions of Garment Workers

The everyday living condition of hard-working garment workers in rapidly growing big cities is truly heartbreaking and entirely unacceptable. Because of their exceptionally poor monthly income, they simply cannot afford to rent normal, healthy residential flats or proper brick houses. Consequently, they are mercilessly forced to live in highly unhygienic, deeply polluted, and severely overcrowded urban slums.

Inside these neglected slums, the surrounding environment is extraordinarily dirty and completely unsuitable for human habitation. Usually, an entire poor family consisting of four to five members has to live together inside a single, tiny, dark, and damp room. The roofs of these fragile shanties are often made of cheap, thin corrugated tin, which makes the rooms unbearably hot during the boiling summer months and freezing cold during the harsh winter season. Furthermore, a huge number of slum residents have to queue up and share only one or two extremely dirty common toilets and communal bathrooms. There is also a continuous, massive crisis of pure, safe drinking water. Because of this heavily contaminated environment, the workers and their fragile children frequently suffer from deadly waterborne diseases like cholera, severe diarrhea, and painful skin infections.

It is the fundamental moral duty of the state to ensure basic, hygienic housing for all its contributing citizens. The government should urgently build subsidized, low-cost housing projects near the major industrial areas so that these incredibly hard-working people can finally live a healthy, safe, and decent life.

Recent Earthquake Jolts Bangladesh: A Call for Preparedness

A moderate earthquake jolted Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh recently, creating severe panic among the citizens. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale. It struck late at night on June 7, shaking buildings and waking people up from their sleep.  

The epicenter of this earthquake was located in neighboring Bhutan, about 432 kilometers north of Dhaka. Though the shake was felt very strongly, thankfully, there were no immediate reports of any major damage to buildings or loss of life. However, the sudden tremor terrified the common people. Fearing for their lives, many people rushed out of their houses and high-rise apartments, taking shelter in the open streets.  

Experts have repeatedly warned that Bangladesh is situated in an active earthquake zone. The frequent occurrence of such mild and moderate tremors is a serious warning sign. If a massive earthquake hits the country, highly populated cities like Dhaka will face unimaginable destruction. This is mainly because thousands of buildings have been constructed without following proper earthquake-resistant designs.  

To prevent a future disaster, the government must take strict actions immediately. Construction of risky and unplanned buildings must be stopped. At the same time, massive public awareness campaigns should be launched. Everyone must learn basic safety rules, such as hiding under a strong table during a tremor. Though we cannot stop an earthquake, taking the right preparation can surely save thousands of lives.
