Why Students Fail in English: A Growing Concern

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, June 18

English is a compulsory subject in our education system, but it is also the subject where students fail the most. Every year, a large number of students fail their board exams only because of English. There are several reasons behind this alarming situation in Bangladesh.

First of all, English is a foreign language, and most students have a natural fear or phobia of it. Instead of trying to understand the rules and meaning, they simply memorize answers from guidebooks. As a result, when questions are slightly changed in the exam, they cannot answer them properly.

Secondly, our teaching method is often faulty. Many schools, especially in rural areas, do not have trained English teachers. Classes are overcrowded, making it impossible for teachers to give individual attention to weaker students. Furthermore, students do not get an English-speaking environment at home or school, which limits their daily practice.

To solve this major problem, the teaching system must be changed. Teachers should make the lessons interesting and interactive rather than just focusing on strict grammar rules. Students must be encouraged to read English storybooks and practice speaking with friends without the fear of making mistakes. If we can remove the fear of English, the pass rate will definitely improve.

Flawed Methods and Fear: The Root of English Failures

Education Correspondent, The Daily Star, Dhaka, June 18

Despite the introduction of the Communicative English curriculum, the failure rate in English remains a major headache for the education board. A deep dive into the issue reveals that the problem lies not with the students' merit, but largely within the instructional methods and assessment systems.

The primary cause is the lack of skilled and adequately trained teachers, particularly in rural and suburban institutions. Many teachers still follow the traditional Grammar-Translation method instead of practical, communicative approaches. Consequently, students treat English merely as a subject to pass rather than a language to master for real-life communication.

Moreover, the over-reliance on commercial guidebooks and coaching centers has severely damaged students' creative writing skills. The current examination system often rewards rote learning over actual linguistic competence. Large class sizes further prevent interactive language practice, making classes dull. When students face unseen passages or creative writing tasks, they easily panic and fail.

Addressing this issue requires immediate pedagogical reform. The government must arrange continuous, rigorous training for English teachers. Furthermore, the examination pattern should be modified to test actual listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills instead of testing memorized paragraphs and essays.

Beyond the Syllabus: Systemic Causes of English Failures

Special Correspondent, Dhaka Tribune, June 18

The consistent failure of students in English across secondary and higher secondary levels highlights a deep-rooted systemic crisis in Bangladesh’s educational framework. While "English phobia" is often blamed, the actual causes are heavily tied to socio-economic disparities and structural flaws in language evaluation.

A significant factor is the sharp urban-rural divide. Students in metropolitan areas enjoy access to better-equipped schools, digital resources, and a culturally supportive environment for language acquisition. In contrast, rural students are heavily deprived of competent instructors and modern learning tools, putting them at a severe academic disadvantage from a young age.

Additionally, the education system inadvertently promotes "teaching to the test." The focus is heavily skewed toward written grammar and textbook comprehension, almost completely ignoring the spoken and listening aspects of the language. This creates a psychological barrier where students feel overwhelmed by complex grammatical rules without understanding their practical application. The booming private tutoring industry further exacerbates this, creating an unequal playing field where only those who can afford expensive coaching succeed.

To eradicate this persistent failure, a holistic approach is mandatory. Decentralizing quality education, ensuring equitable distribution of trained teachers, and reforming the curriculum to prioritize functional language skills over theoretical grammar are crucial steps to save the youth from academic disaster.

Selected Vocabulary (নির্বাচিত শব্দার্থ):

  • systemic (adj.) – পদ্ধতিগত / কাঠামোগত

  • disparities (n.) – বৈষম্য

  • acquisition (n.) – অর্জন (ভাষা শেখার প্রক্রিয়া)

  • skewed (adj.) – পক্ষপাতদুষ্ট / একপেশে

  • exacerbate (v.) – অধিকতর খারাপ করা / অবনতি ঘটানো

  • holistic (adj.) – সমগ্রতাবাদী / সামগ্রিক

The Dark Side of Social Media: Facebook's Toll on the Youth

Staff Correspondent, The Daily Sun, Dhaka, June 10

While Facebook was designed to connect people globally, it has paradoxically become a source of profound isolation and psychological distress for today's young generation. In Bangladesh, the unchecked and excessive use of this platform is leading to severe social and moral degradation among teenagers, raising alarms among sociologists, parents, and mental health experts alike.

The most concerning negative impact is the sharp rise in psychological disorders. Young minds are constantly exposed to the artificial, heavily curated lives of others, which often triggers an intense "fear of missing out" (FOMO). This continuous toxic comparison breeds deep-seated inferiority complexes, anxiety, and severe depression. Furthermore, Facebook has become a notorious breeding ground for cyberbullying. Teenagers frequently fall victim to online harassment, blackmail, and public shaming, which in some tragic instances has driven young individuals to self-harm.

Socially, this addiction is eroding the very fabric of family life. Youngsters are increasingly confining themselves to their rooms, completely absorbed in virtual interactions while ignoring their parents and siblings. This lack of real-world socialization prevents them from developing essential interpersonal skills, patience, and empathy. Moreover, unfiltered exposure to alien cultures and inappropriate content is slowly distancing the youth from our rich cultural heritage and traditional ethical values.

To save the youth from this digital abyss, immediate and coordinated steps are necessary. Parents must actively monitor screen time and cultivate an environment that encourages real-life communication and outdoor activities. Educational institutions must introduce regular counseling on digital safety and moral values, teaching the young generation that virtual validation is no substitute for real-world achievements.

Selected Vocabulary (নির্বাচিত শব্দার্থ):

  • paradoxically (adv.) – বৈপরীত্যভাবে / অদ্ভুতভাবে

  • profound (adj.) – গভীর / তীব্র

  • curated (adj.) – সুসজ্জিত / বাছাইকৃত

  • inferiority complex (n.) – হীনম্মন্যতা

  • harassment (n.) – হয়রানি

  • erode (v.) – ক্ষয় করা / নষ্ট করা

  • abyss (n.) – অতল গহ্বর

  • validation (n.) – স্বীকৃতি / বৈধতা প্রমাণ

Struggles of the Rohingya: A Crisis in Cox’s Bazar

Amin, Cox’s Bazar, February 1, 2025

The Rohingya crisis remains one of the most pressing humanitarian issues, with thousands of refugees seeking shelter in makeshift camps in Cox’s Bazar. Fleeing persecution in Myanmar, these displaced people arrive exhausted, with little more than the clothes on their backs. Life in the camps is a daily struggle for survival, with overcrowding, food shortages, and limited access to healthcare.

Walking through the camps, one cannot ignore the dire conditions. Families live in fragile bamboo huts covered with plastic sheets, offering little protection from the elements. Many refugees recount harrowing journeys, trekking for days without food or water. Their suffering doesn’t end upon arrival, as they face new challenges in the cramped settlements.

The lack of proper sanitation and clean water increases the risk of disease outbreaks. Malnutrition is widespread, particularly among children, who suffer from stunted growth and weakened immune systems. Medical teams work tirelessly, but the demand far exceeds available resources. Clinics operate under extreme pressure, struggling to provide essential care with limited medicine and staff.

Education is another critical concern. Thousands of children in the camps have no access to formal schooling, leaving their future uncertain. Some makeshift learning centers exist, but they lack trained teachers and adequate materials. Without proper education, an entire generation risks being left behind, trapped in a cycle of poverty and dependence.

Despite these hardships, the resilience of the Rohingya people is evident. They have built small communities within the camps, supporting one another through shared struggles. Local and international organizations continue their efforts to provide aid, but the situation remains precarious.

Temporary relief is not enough. The global community must take meaningful steps toward a long-term solution, ensuring safety, dignity, and a future for the Rohingya people. Without decisive action, this crisis will continue to deepen, leaving thousands in desperate conditions with no way forward
