But the once mighty Buriganga river, which flows by Dhaka, is now one of the most polluted rivers in Bangladesh because of rampant dumping of industrial and human waste. “The water of the Buriganga is now so polluted that all fish have died, and increasing filth and human waste have turned it like a black gel. Even rowing across the river is now difficult for it smells so badly,” he told the reporters. The plight of the Buriganga symbolises the general state of many rivers in Bangladesh, a large flat land criss-crossed by hundreds of rivers which faces an uphill battle to keep them navigable and their water safe for human and aquatic lives. Unabated encroachment that prevents the free flow of water, dumping of medicinal waste and waste of river passengers have compounded the problem, making the water unusable for humans and livestock.

Among the top polluters are dozens of tanneries on the banks of the Buriganga. The government recently initiated a move to relocate the tanneries outside the capital, and also asked illegal encroachers to vacate the river. But environmental groups say they defy such orders by using their political links or by bribing people.

Although the Department of Environment periodically launches token eviction drives against illegal encroachers, vested interest groups routinely bypass regulations through political backing. Civil society organizations have strongly urged the government to implement stringent industrial waste management laws and establish modern effluent treatment plants (ETPs) before the Turag suffers the irreversible fate of the Buriganga.

Shitalakshya River Faces Severe Pollution

Local Correspondent, Narayanganj, September 20, 2026: The historic Shitalakshya River, flowing past the industrial hub of Narayanganj, is suffering from severe environmental pollution. Careless dumping of industrial waste and household garbage has ruined the once clear water of this vital river, turning it pitch black and terribly smelly.

Local fishermen shared that they can no longer catch any fish because the water has become too toxic. "We used to make a good living by fishing in this river, but now it only brings bad smells and diseases," said an elderly fisherman with deep sorrow. Besides factories, many illegal establishments and houses along the riverbanks are directly dumping plastic and solid waste into the water, blocking its natural flow.

Although local authorities have occasionally fined some polluting factories, the illegal dumping continues under the cover of night. The water of the river is not clean anymore. It looks dark and smells very bad. All the fish in the water are dying because of the poisonous chemicals coming from factories. People living near the riverbank are suffering from various skin diseases and breathing problems due to the foul smell.

Some people are also building illegal houses by grabbing the river land. This makes the river narrow and stops the water from flowing smoothly. The government and environment officers are trying to stop this bad work. They are telling people to keep the river clean. Everyone hopes that the Karnaphuli will get back its old beauty very soon so that people and fish can live safely.
