 16 infected with anthrax in Bangladesh

Staff Reporter, Dhaka, July 5, 2018: Sixteen people, including four women, have been infected with anthrax at Khirshin village under Paba sub-district of northwestern Rajshahi district after eating contaminated beef.

Having heard the news of infection on Saturday night, sub-district executive officer Abu Selim Mahmudul Hassan and sub-district livestock officer Shafiqul Alam visited the area and set up a health camp from yesterday.

Quoting the report, they said the infected people had eaten beef of two slaughtered cattle purchased from a market near the Rajshahi city on August 3. Subsequently, all the men and women, who were involved in slaughtering, slicing and handling the meat, were infected with the skin disease. About 10 of them were given treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

“We are getting anthrax patients in the hospital frequently for the last couple of days,” said Dr Nazmul Huda Sumon, Resident Physician of RMCH, adding that they are now improving after treatment.

He said the skin disease spreads through different modes like direct contact, inoculation and inhalation.

Anthrax is an infectious disease due to a type of bacteria called bacillus anthracis. Infection in humans most often involves the skin, gastrointestinal tract, or lungs, he said. He also said, anthrax commonly affects hoofed animals such as sheep, cattle, and goats, but humans who come into contact with infected animals can also get sick from anthrax. In the past, the people who were most at risk for anthrax included farm workers, veterinarians as well as tannery and wool workers.

An official from Live Stock Department control room said 28 cows and 5 goats have died of anthrax in Sirajganj and Pabna since the outbreak of the disease.

Talking to the reporter, Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, assistant professor of Medicine of RMCH, put emphasis on creating awareness among the mass people about the precautionary measures.

Deadly Nipah Virus Strikes University Campus

Staff Reporter, Savar, February 10, 2026: A sudden outbreak of the deadly Nipah virus has caused widespread panic at Jahangirnagar University. At least twelve students residing in various dormitories have been infected after allegedly consuming raw date palm sap from local village vendors.

According to the university's medical center, the affected students started showing severe symptoms, including high fever, respiratory distress, and neurological issues, early Sunday morning. They were immediately rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. Doctors confirmed the presence of the Nipah virus and stated that three students are currently in critical condition under intensive care.

Health officials from the national disease control institute quickly arrived at the campus to investigate the situation. "We have collected blood samples and set up an emergency isolation unit. Students must strictly avoid drinking raw date juice, as it is often contaminated by the saliva of fruit bats," said Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, a senior epidemiologist.

The university authority has temporarily suspended all academic activities to clean the campus premises. They have also launched a massive awareness campaign to prevent further transmission of this fatal disease and urged students to report any fever symptoms immediately.

বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চিকিৎসা কেন্দ্রের মতে, আক্রান্ত শিক্ষার্থীরা রবিবার ভোরে তীব্র জ্বর, শ্বাসকষ্ট এবং স্নায়বিক সমস্যাসহ মারাত্মক উপসর্গ দেখাতে শুরু করে। তাদের তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে সাভারের এনাম মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। চিকিৎসকরা নিপাহ ভাইরাসের উপস্থিতি নিশ্চিত করেছেন এবং জানিয়েছেন যে বর্তমানে তিনজন শিক্ষার্থীর অবস্থা আশঙ্কাজনক, তারা নিবিড় পরিচর্যা কেন্দ্রে (আইসিইউ) আছেন।

Severe Food Poisoning at Sylhet College Hostel

Staff Reporter, Sylhet, September 20, 2025: Around 25 students of Sylhet MC College fell severely ill due to food poisoning at their hostel yesterday. The sad incident happened after the young students ate their dinner in the hostel dining room on Monday night.

In the middle of the night, many students started complaining of severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. The hostel superintendent and other healthy students quickly took the sick victims to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Many anxious parents rushed to the hospital after hearing the news.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the duty doctor at the hospital, said that the students became sick from eating spoiled or unhygienic food. He confirmed that most of the students are now out of danger after receiving proper saline and medical treatment.

The college Principal visited the hospital in the morning to check on the sick students. A special committee has been formed to investigate the condition of the hostel kitchen. The college authority promised to take strict action against the dining manager for serving bad food to the students.

মাঝরাতে অনেক শিক্ষার্থী প্রচণ্ড পেটব্যথা, বমি এবং ডায়রিয়ার অভিযোগ করতে শুরু করে। হোস্টেল সুপারিনটেনডেন্ট এবং অন্যান্য সুস্থ শিক্ষার্থীরা দ্রুত অসুস্থদের সিলেট এমএজি ওসমানী মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যায়। খবর শুনে অনেক উদ্বিগ্ন অভিভাবক হাসপাতালে ছুটে আসেন।

হাসপাতালের কর্তব্যরত চিকিৎসক ডা. শফিকুর রহমান জানান, নষ্ট বা অস্বাস্থ্যকর খাবার খাওয়ার কারণে শিক্ষার্থীরা অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েছে। তিনি নিশ্চিত করেছেন যে সঠিক স্যালাইন এবং চিকিৎসা পাওয়ার পর বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী এখন শঙ্কামুক্ত।

Dengue Fever Spreads in Cumilla School

Local Correspondent, Cumilla, August 15, 2025: Ten students of Cumilla Zilla School have caught Dengue fever this week. This sudden news has made the teachers and parents very worried. The sick students are now taking treatment at the Cumilla General Hospital and are slowly getting better.

Doctors said that the students got the fever from the bites of Aedes mosquitoes. These dangerous mosquitoes usually bite during the daytime. Some parents complained that there was dirty, stagnant water in the school playground and near the flower garden. The mosquitoes were breeding in that dirty water.

After hearing this complaint, the Headmaster of the school took very quick action. He ordered the cleaners to clean the whole school area immediately. They also sprayed medicine everywhere to kill the flying mosquitoes and destroy their eggs.

The Headmaster also told all the students to wear long-sleeved shirts and full pants to stay safe from mosquito bites. He requested everyone to keep their houses and the school very clean so that Dengue cannot spread anymore.

এই অভিযোগ শোনার পর স্কুলের প্রধান শিক্ষক খুব দ্রুত ব্যবস্থা নেন। তিনি পরিচ্ছন্নতাকর্মীদের অবিলম্বে পুরো স্কুল এলাকা পরিষ্কার করার নির্দেশ দেন। তারা উড়ন্ত মশা মারতে এবং তাদের ডিম ধ্বংস করতে সব জায়গায় ওষুধও স্প্রে করে।

প্রধান শিক্ষক সব শিক্ষার্থীকে মশার কামড় থেকে নিরাপদ থাকতে লম্বা হাতার শার্ট এবং ফুল প্যান্ট পরতে বলেছেন। তিনি ডেঙ্গু যাতে আর ছড়াতে না পারে সে জন্য সবাইকে তাদের বাড়িঘর এবং স্কুল খুব পরিষ্কার রাখার অনুরোধ করেছেন।]
