Optative Sentence

We use ‘wish’ or ‘pray’ in the Optative Sentence in the place of ‘said to’ or ‘said’.

My grandfather said, “May you live long.”

My grandfather wished that I might live long. 

The teacher said to the boy, “God bless you.” (Optative Sentence without May)

The teacher prayed for the boy that God might bless him.

He said, “Would that I were here.”

He wished that he had been there.

They said,” O that! We had won the match.”

They wished that they had won the match.


Note:  “Would that” and “O that” are removed in the Indirect Speech.

  18. He said, “May the truth triumph against all odds.”

  19. He said to me, "May you live long !"

  20. She said, "May your enemy go to hell !"

  22. He said to her, "Good bye, my sister !"

  25. The lady said, “Good morning, gentlemen.”

  27. The children said to him, “Good evening, Sir.”

  29. She said,"May you succeed in the examination!"

  34. The Priest said to the lady,"May God bless you with a lovely son!"

  36. She said to him."May you progress and prosper in life, my son!"

  37. Mother said to me, "May you prosper in life."

  38. The old man said to me, "May God bless you."

  39. The followers said, "Long live our leader."

  40. The girl said, "Could I but get the wings of bird."
