Kazi Nazrul Islam and the Poor Boy / A Great Poet's Generosity
Kazi Nazrul Islam is our national poet. One day he was eating his meal. Suddenly a poor, hungry boy came to him and stood silently. The great poet looked up and noticed the pale, exhausted face of the young boy. The boy was wearing torn, dirty clothes, and his eyes were fixed on the warm, delicious food placed on the poet’s dining table. Nazrul, who himself had suffered the severe pangs of poverty and extreme hunger in his early childhood, immediately understood the boy's unspoken pain.
He stopped eating, smiled affectionately, and gently called the boy closer. He asked in a very kind and soft voice, "Have you eaten anything today, my child? Are you hungry?" The boy hesitated for a moment, lowered his eyes, and silently shook his head to indicate that he was starving. Without a single second of delay, the generous poet washed his hands, brought a new plate, and happily shared his entire meal with the poor boy. He fed the child with immense love and care until the boy's stomach was completely full.
After the meal, Nazrul asked the boy about his family and background. The boy burst into tears and explained that he was a poor orphan with nobody to look after him in this vast world. However, he also expressed a strong, deep desire to study and become a good human being. Nazrul was highly impressed by the boy's intelligence and noble ambition. The great poet's heart melted with deep compassion.
He firmly placed his hand on the boy's shoulder and promised to take full responsibility for his food, clothing, and education. He admitted the boy to a reputed local school and bore all his necessary academic expenses. Guided by the poet's strict affection and inspired by his great ideals, the poor, hungry boy studied very hard day and night. Eventually, he established himself as a highly educated and respected member of society, forever remembering the immense generosity of the Rebel Poet.
Moral: Kindness is a great virtue.
The Poet and the Oppressed
Kazi Nazrul Islam is our national poet. One day he was eating his meal. Suddenly a poor, hungry boy came to him and stood silently. The boy’s clothes were ragged, and his tired eyes were glued to the steaming rice and fish on the poet’s dining table. Nazrul, famously known as the Rebel Poet, had a heart that melted very easily at the sight of human suffering. He immediately pushed his plate toward the boy and warmly invited him to eat.
The starving child hesitated in fear, then began to eat ravenously. As he ate, Nazrul quietly observed the deep sadness and dark bruises on the boy's thin arms. After the satisfying meal, the poet gently asked the boy about his life. The child, named Rahim, revealed with tears in his eyes that he worked at a nearby bustling tea stall. The cruel owner forced him to work long hours, beat him for minor mistakes, and often kept him starving.
Hearing this agonizing tale, the rebel inside Nazrul completely awoke. He could not tolerate such terrible injustice against an innocent child. He immediately took Rahim by the hand and marched straight to the tea stall. With his fierce, booming voice, Nazrul confronted the cruel owner, warning him of severe consequences for abusing a helpless child. The owner, recognizing the famous and powerful poet, apologized profusely out of deep fear.
However, Nazrul firmly refused to leave Rahim in that miserable place. He brought the boy back to his own home and gave him permanent shelter. That very night, unable to sleep due to the intense pain he felt for the working children of his country, Nazrul penned a brilliant, fiery poem about the struggles of the poor. Rahim grew up under the poet's caring guidance, ultimately becoming a dedicated school teacher who fought passionately against child labor.
Moral: True greatness lies in fighting against injustice and protecting the helpless.
The Song of the Streets
Kazi Nazrul Islam is our national poet. One day he was eating his meal. Suddenly a poor, hungry boy came to him and stood silently. The boy looked extremely pale, weak, and exhausted. His clothes were nothing but dirty, torn rags, but his big, innocent eyes were fixed on the poet's plate. Nazrul Islam, who had experienced the bitter pain of poverty during his own childhood, immediately understood the boy's silent, desperate plea.
Without a second thought, the generous poet stopped eating. He brought a fresh plate, served the best pieces of fish and a generous amount of warm rice, and told the boy to eat as much as he wanted. The boy ate hungrily, his face slowly lighting up with immense relief and gratitude. After finishing the hearty meal, the boy sat near the window. Feeling safe and content for the first time in months, he unconsciously began to hum a sweet, rural folk tune.
Nazrul, a legendary maestro of music, possessed an incredible ear for talent. He was completely mesmerized by the boy’s natural, melodious voice. He approached the boy and encouraged him to sing the full song aloud. Though shy at first, the boy sang beautifully. Nazrul was absolutely thrilled. He realized that leaving this boy on the harsh streets would be a tragic waste of a divine gift.
He formally adopted the boy as his own music student. He gave him a clean room, proper food, and began teaching him classical music, raga, and his own newly composed songs. The boy was a fast learner and incredibly devoted to his generous master. Years later, that once-starving street boy became a famous radio artist, dedicating his entire life to spreading Nazrul's immortal songs across Bengal.
Moral: Recognizing and nurturing hidden talent is a tremendous act of kindness.
The Gift of a Future
Kazi Nazrul Islam is our national poet. One day he was eating his meal. Suddenly a poor, hungry boy came to him and stood silently. The boy was shivering slightly, and his fragile body clearly showed that he had been starving for many days. He did not ask for money; he simply stared at the warm food with desperate, longing eyes. Nazrul's compassionate heart broke instantly at this heartbreaking sight.
He lovingly called the boy to his side, made him sit comfortably on the mat, and offered him his own untouched meal. The poet watched with immense satisfaction as the hungry child ate every last grain of rice. Once the boy was completely full, Nazrul gently wiped the child's face and asked about his parents. The boy started crying bitterly and explained that he had lost his entire family in a devastating village flood. He had come to the unknown city hoping to find some harsh work as a servant just to survive.
Nazrul stroked the boy's head affectionately. "A child of your age should be holding a pencil and a book, not washing dirty dishes or sweeping floors," the great poet declared firmly. He knew that the future of the nation depended on the proper upbringing of these neglected children. Nazrul took the boy to a nearby market, bought him comfortable new clothes, and gave him a warm, safe place to sleep.
The very next morning, the poet took the boy to a well-known local school. He enrolled him in the primary section and paid for his books and tuition in advance. Nazrul requested the headmaster to take special care of the orphan. The boy, deeply moved by this god-like intervention, promised to work harder than anyone else. Through sheer determination and the poet's continuous support, the boy eventually graduated with honors, becoming an honest and successful civil servant.
Moral: Education and genuine love can transform a life of despair into a life of greatness.
