IELTS Speaking Part-3 Gifts

1. Why do people give gifts in our society?

Um, there are many reasons why people give gifts in our society. One major reason is to celebrate significant events such as birthdays, anniversaries, or graduations. For instance, giving a gift to someone graduating from university is a way to acknowledge their hard work and achievement. Gifts are also given to express appreciation or gratitude. For example, if someone has helped you in a challenging situation or done something special, a gift can be a meaningful way to say “thank you” and show your appreciation.

2. Why do some people like to give hand-made gifts instead of purchasing them in a store?

I think people often prefer hand-made gifts because they carry a more personal touch compared to store-bought items. When someone creates a gift by hand, it demonstrates that they have invested time and effort into making something unique for the recipient. This personal effort makes the gift feel more special and thoughtful. It’s not just about the physical item but the sentiment behind it—showing that the giver truly cares about the recipient.

3. What kind of educational gifts can be given to children?

Hmmm, I’d say educational gifts for children can be both fun and informative. Books are an excellent choice because they offer a vast range of knowledge and stimulate a child’s imagination. For instance, a well-written book on science or adventure can inspire a love for learning. Additionally, educational apps or interactive learning tools can be very beneficial, especially in today’s digital age. These resources can help children learn new skills in a playful and engaging manner.

Gifts & Presents:

4. Tell me about any famous stores that sell presents.

In India, Hallmark is a well-known store for buying gifts. Hallmark specializes in greeting cards and a variety of small gift items. The store’s greeting cards are renowned for their creativity and heartfelt messages, which cater to various occasions and relationships. Besides cards, Hallmark offers a range of gifts, including jewelry, perfumes, and decorative items made from materials like crystal and glass. The store’s emphasis on quality and creativity makes it a popular choice for thoughtful presents.

5. Tell me about any famous markets or stores which attract tourists.

One of the most famous markets in India is Bapu Bazaar in Jaipur. This bustling street market attracts both local and international tourists. It offers a diverse range of products including clothing, ornaments, and household items at reasonable prices. The market is known for its vibrant atmosphere and the opportunity to bargain for goods, which adds to its appeal. Tourists enjoy the chance to purchase traditional Indian items and experience the lively market culture.

6. Why are they popular with tourists?

Street markets like Bapu Bazaar are popular with tourists because they offer an authentic shopping experience and a wide variety of traditional items at competitive prices. Unlike modern shopping malls, which often feature branded products, these markets provide unique and culturally rich goods. Tourists are drawn to the opportunity to explore and find distinctive items that they might not encounter in standard retail outlets. The bargaining experience and the chance to immerse in local culture also enhance their appeal.

7. Would you agree that presents are always advantageous for people?

I wouldn’t necessarily agree that presents are always advantageous. While gifts generally bring joy and can improve someone's mood, the impact depends on the context. For example, receiving a gift during a time of grief might feel inappropriate or out of place. Gifts are meant to be thoughtful and suited to the occasion, so while they often bring happiness, their effectiveness can vary depending on the situation and the recipient’s needs.

8. What kinds of presents are suitable for people in any situation?

For most situations, versatile and thoughtful presents work well. Items like books, chocolates, or personalized gifts are generally suitable for various occasions. For example, a classic book can be appreciated by many, while a box of high-quality chocolates is a pleasant treat. Personalized gifts, such as custom mugs or photo frames, also add a personal touch and are often well-received. If unsure, a gift card or a modest amount of cash can allow the recipient to choose something they truly want or need.

9. How do you think the way of giving presents will change in the future?

The way people give presents might evolve with advancements in technology. Digital gifts such as e-gift cards, virtual experiences, or online subscriptions could become more common. The convenience of sending virtual gifts instantly might appeal to busy lifestyles, though it might lack the personal touch of physical gifts. While the types of gifts might change, the underlying tradition of giving and receiving presents as a gesture of care and celebration is likely to continue.

10. Do you enjoy giving and receiving gifts? Why or why not?

I must admit that I find giving and receiving gifts a bit challenging. As an introvert, I prefer solitude and often feel uneasy about the social interactions that come with gift-giving and receiving. However, I understand the importance of these gestures in maintaining relationships and showing appreciation. While I might not enjoy the process, I recognize the value of gifts in expressing care and building connections.

11. Who usually gives you gifts?

I usually receive gifts from close family members and friends. My family, especially my mother, often gives me thoughtful presents, taking into account my preferences and introverted nature. They know me well and try to make the gifting experience as comfortable as possible, often handling the social aspects on my behalf.

12. Who do you give gifts to?

I typically give gifts to close friends and family members on special occasions. Although I don’t often attend events myself, I make sure to send gifts through my family. This approach allows me to participate in celebrations while maintaining my preference for solitude.

13. In your country, when do people usually give gifts?

In Australia, people commonly exchange gifts during Christmas and on other special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings. It is a tradition to bring gifts to these events, which adds to the festive atmosphere and shows appreciation for the hosts or the celebrants.

14. What kinds of gifts do they give?

Gift choices often vary depending on the occasion and the recipient. For weddings, practical items for the couple’s new life together are common, while toys are typical for children’s birthdays. Cash gifts are also popular as they allow the recipient to choose something they need or want.

15. Do you think gift-giving customs are different now than they were in the past? How?

Gift-giving customs have evolved over time, though the core traditions remain similar. Historically, gifts were often practical and directly useful. Nowadays, while practical gifts are still appreciated, there is a trend towards more personalized and experience-based gifts, such as digital vouchers or customized items. The underlying purpose of gift-giving—expressing care and celebration—has remained constant.

16. Do you think they will change in the future? How?

Future changes in gift-giving might include a greater emphasis on digital and experiential gifts due to technological advancements. Virtual gifts, like e-cards or online subscriptions, could become more prevalent. However, the fundamental tradition of giving gifts to show appreciation and celebrate special moments is likely to endure, albeit with some modern adaptations.
