 Finding an Honest Man

Once there lived a Sultan in a country. He wanted to find an honest man to collect taxes. Many people applied for the job, but the Sultan found it difficult to identify the most honest person among them. Confused, he sought the advice of his wise counselor. The counselor suggested a clever plan to test their honesty.

The Sultan invited all the applicants to the palace. On the way to the hall room, he had some coins scattered along the passage. The applicants walked through the passage to reach the hall. When they arrived, the Sultan greeted them and gave an unexpected command. “Before I choose the tax collector,” he said, “I want you all to dance for me.”

At first, the applicants were surprised and hesitated. Then, one by one, they all refused to dance. The Sultan noticed their unease. Their faces were pale, and they avoided eye contact. The reason soon became clear — every one of them, except one man, had taken the coins from the passage. They feared that if they danced, the coins in their pockets would jingle and reveal their dishonesty.

The only man who stepped forward to dance had taken no coins. He danced confidently and without hesitation because he had nothing to hide. The Sultan watched him closely and smiled.

After the test, the Sultan declared, “This man is the most honest among you all. He will be the tax collector.” The others were ashamed, and some tried to explain, but the Sultan silenced them. “I placed the coins on the passage to test your integrity,” he said. “An honest man does not take what is not his. This man passed the test, and his honesty will serve the kingdom well.”

The chosen man performed his duties with fairness and integrity, and the Sultan was pleased with his decision. This story teaches us that honesty is always rewarded and that true integrity can withstand any test.
