Questions and Answers
PART 1: School
Did you go to secondary/high school near to where you lived? Why/Why not?
Yes, I went to a secondary school close to where I lived. It was convenient for my parents to drop me off, and I could easily walk home after classes. This allowed me to participate in after-school activities without worrying about transportation.
What did you like about your secondary/high school? Why?
I liked the supportive environment at my school. The teachers were approachable and genuinely cared about our education. Additionally, I enjoyed the extracurricular activities available, which helped me explore my interests and make new friends.
Tell me about anything you didn't like at your school.
One thing I didn’t like was the strict dress code. It felt limiting because we couldn't express our individuality through our clothing. I believe having a more relaxed dress code would allow students to feel more comfortable and confident.
How do you think your school could be improved? Why/Why not?
I think my school could be improved by incorporating more modern technology into the classrooms. This would enhance learning experiences and better prepare students for the digital world they will encounter in the future.
PART II: Describe Something You Don't Have Now but Would Really Like to Own in the Future
I would really like to own a high-quality camera in the future. I've wanted one for about two years now because I enjoy photography and capturing moments.
I first saw a professional camera at a friend's house. They had taken some stunning photos with it, and it inspired me to get into photography myself.
I would like to own a camera because I believe it would help me improve my skills and express my creativity. I want to capture beautiful landscapes and candid moments with friends and family. Having my own camera would also allow me to document my travels and experiences in a more personal way.
PART III: Discussion Topics
Owning Things
What types of things do young people in your country most want to own today? Why is this?
Young people in my country often want to own the latest smartphones and fashionable clothing. These items are seen as status symbols and can help them fit in with their peers. Social media also plays a big role in influencing these desires.
Why do some people feel they need to own things?
Some people feel the need to own things because possessions can provide a sense of security and comfort. Additionally, owning items that represent success or status can boost self-esteem and make them feel more accepted in society.
Do you think that owning lots of things makes people happy? Why?
While owning things can bring temporary happiness, I believe that true happiness comes from experiences and relationships rather than material possessions. Over time, the excitement of new things fades, but memories created with loved ones last forever.
Salaries for Skilled People
Do you think television and films can make people want to get new possessions? Why do they have this effect?
Yes, television and films can influence people's desires for new possessions. They often showcase glamorous lifestyles, making viewers aspire to own similar items. This effect is heightened by advertising and product placement within shows and movies.
Are there any benefits to society of people wanting to get new possessions? Why do you think this is?
Yes, the desire for new possessions can drive economic growth. When people buy new items, it supports businesses and creates jobs. However, it’s important to find a balance between consumerism and sustainability.
Do you think people will consider that having lots of possessions is a sign of success in the future? Why?
I believe that while some people will still equate possessions with success, there is a growing trend towards valuing experiences and personal fulfillment over material wealth. As awareness of environmental issues increases, people may prioritize minimalism and sustainability over consumerism.
